Ankle deep in fish offal wearing sandals, because if you’re not gonna go full-on Hunter S. gonzo, then what’s even the point?
It’s 7-00am. Ankle deep in fish offal wearing sandals and a killing hangover, with a friendly bloke in fluorescent orange waders inviting me to duet karaoke with him in Cebuano.
Bizarrely, I recognise All Out Of Love. I’d once bought the album to try to impress a girl. Nawad-an na kog gugma ug nawala ko kung wala ka. 110 decibels. I accompany him in English, and he nods encouragingly, reaching out with a flourish, building up to the third-verse key change and a big finish.
I’d met a photographer from Quebec; talented and a good guy. We swapped locations we’d shot at. He put me onto this place - a local fish market on the outskirts of Tagbilaran. An early start. Tylenol and warm Seven-Up, a mishap with a Jeepney trying to find the place, and then instant full immersion into the market just as the night fleet came in.
Sights and sounds and smells. A cup of lukewarm instant coffee at a food stall; I didn’t want to know where the water had come from. A young boy proudly showing me his hen. Drivers delivering ice, human-chaining insulated crates across the market. A family of five on a tricycle. The eye-watering stink of fish guts and seawater. An old man trying to sell me a large crab writhing in his hand. A kid in an old Canucks jersey. A woman showing me the wings on flying fish as she loads them onto an old scale.
My friend in fluorescent orange waders puts another coin in the karaoke machine and moves on to Elvis. Can’t Help Falling In Love ricochets around the market.
I leave. I need breakfast. The man with the crab waves it at me, still hopeful.

🤣 I've been doing some reading. In order to increase followers, I'm apparently supposed to just post cutsie pics (even if they're not particularly interesting photos). I'm also supposed to use a humerous caption, and... [checks notes]... always finish a post with a question to generate comments and... [checks notes]... increase "engagement", whatever that means.
Here goes.
Er...
The exchange rate here is pretty ruff, but he paws-atively gave me a bark-ain (bargain, geddit?).
And a question? Er... do think he's a Cockapoo or a Cavapoo?
Ah, bollocks to this. I'm just gonna go take photos.
