For July 4th, I @sim_creative invited me to create a little loop animation with my own take on this holiday. As a Japanese native who is living in the US longer than living in Japan at this point, I contemplated for a while what it means to me. I am so grateful for the career I made, all the friends I made, and all the creativity the US offers. Yet, however long I spend my time in the US, I still do not feel like its home for me, I suppose It never will. I’m always in between. In the US, I don’t feel like I belong, and in Japan, I’m Japanese but not 100%. That’s why the book I’m reading right now, I-Novel by Minae Mizumura, resonates with me so much. I’ve contemplated July 4th for a while, and simply fireworks came to my mind the most. Whichever nationality you’re and wherever you are, you can simply enjoy it. Also, Japanese associate fireworks with summer. And lastly I quite often spend July 4th back in Japan, like right now. On Air train to JFK airport yesterday, the sky lit up all of sudden with fireworks, I didn’t know what just happened. Only a second later to realize it was some illegal fireworks from someone’s house or front yard. I usually hate illegal fireworks, but at that moment, it illuminated me.
