New Zealand’s @hemihemingway recently released his brilliant new album ‘Wings of Desire’ on @pnkslm Available everywhere! ‘Wings of Desire’ combines the romantic ‘50s and ‘60s influences that are familiar to Hemi Hemingway with a newfound obsession with gothy ‘80s post-punk and New Romantic. “I wanna live on the wings of desire,” are the first words Hemi Hemingway sings on his new album. There’s a reference here, of course, to the 1987 Wim Wenders classic about an angel who gives up his wings so as to experience human love, the aesthetics of which all make sense within Hemingway’s universe: the grimy yet romantic pulse of 1980s Berlin, the way its detached black-and-white gives way to full colour, its post-punk soundtrack. But more than that, this opening line is a statement of intent which fuels the entire album. Grappling with the end of a long-term relationship and a relocation from London to New Zealand, Hemingway’s songwriting began to explore the possibilities of a new, uncertain future. Hemi Hemingway will be over here in April playing some shows before heading to the Great Escape in May. 25th April - Manchester, Yes Basement 28th April - London, Hope & Anchor 13 - 16th May - Brighton, The Great Escape Thank you to @uncut_magazine , @mojo4music @thelineofbestfit , @godisinthetvzine @hardofhearingmagazine , @the1ndiescene , @backseat_mafia , @spillmagazine , @birthdaycakeforandy , @fluxmagazine_uk , @themostradicalist and more for your support.

David Cronenberg’s Wife @cronenbergswife are back with their fifth album, ‘Department of Biology’ due out 1st May on @blang_records Accompanying the announcement, the band have today released lead single “Chekhov’s Bordello”, a bawdy, yet tender tale of Anton Chekhov slipping off to visit a house of disrepute whilst on a visit to a penal colony in 1890. With a wink towards the body horror auteur, David Cronenberg’s Wife (or DCW) are the house band in the biology theatre at the end of the world. They loop riffs in relentless cycles til they stop being riffs and become psychological conditions; the bass maintains the pulse; the guitars sharpen the knives; the drums suggest they’re growing extra limbs. Then, removing an eye from his microscope, the deadpan lecturer with the twinkle in his eye details narratives of the absurd and the macabre, all the while waiting for the weaker stomached of his audience to exit the room in despair. Told with devilish wit and displaying a vulnerability beneath the jagged edges, the musicians don’t so much soundtrack these stories as stalk them. The songs of DCW are unhinged to the point where the door at the dark side of the corridor falls off into the seediest underbelly of fun. The band will be touring the UK in end of May and June - dates to be announced shortly.

Stockholm quartet, @lesbigbyrd the Swedish psychedelic rock giants, are back with their fifth album, ‘Ruin Everything’ due out 5th June on @chimp_limbs Led by frontman Jocke Åhlund (Teddybears, Caesars etc), Les Big Byrd have established themselves as one of the premier Nordic rock acts over the past decade with their distinct blend of psych, kraut and melodic sensibilities. Lead single, “Hökvind” is out now on all streaming services, and showcases the band’s heavier side, ahead of an Australian tour supporting Brian Jonestown Massacre. Two years after their latest album ‘Diamonds, Rhinestones and Hard Rain’ Jocke Åhlund, Frans Johansson, Nino Keller and Christian Olsson are in a creative flow. A joyful sense of creation runs through ‘Ruin Everything’ which, in classic Les Big Byrd fashion, alternates between Swedish and English, and between kraut-inspired improvisations and simple pop songs. Its been fifteen years since Les Big Byrd’s debut single and perhaps they have just as many years left to give. Everything has fallen into place, and now all that remains is to perfect the group’s characteristic sound. The band describe ‘Ruin Everything’ as “peak Les Big Byrd.” Or, as Jocke Åhlund puts it: “We’re late bloomers. It’s finally starting to look like something!”

I’m stoked to be working with @keeledscales again, on a very special album from the brilliant @hidingplacesband Today, they announce their debut album, ‘The Secret to Good Living’ out 3rd April and release their new single “Waiting” out now all all streaming services. It makes sense that the band formed while three of its members were DJs at their college radio station at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. They embrace music as a means of communication, identity-forming, and deeper understanding of human nature. Songwriters/guitarists Audrey Keelin and Nicholas Byrne alternate between fronting the band, sharing lead vocals and lending the 10-song record the tone of an intimate conversation with room for silence and deeper concentration. Rounded out by a rhythm section of drummer Henry Cutting and bassist/producer Michael Matsakis, they’ve developed a forward-thinking sound with a sense of nostalgia built into it: a blend that draws from the collage-like indie rock of Yo La Tengo, the elegant slowcore of The New Year, the riffy story-songs of Drive-By Truckers, and the analogue hum of The Microphones. ‘The Secret to Good Living’, which bridges their fuzzy home-recorded demos with their first experience in a professional recording studio, helps translate their humble beginnings to the big stages for which they seem destined. It’s the product of hermetic late-night sessions, collaborative writing retreats in Athens, Georgia, and an evolving perspective on their singular dynamic. After years of working remotely, this record marks the collective result of the quartet living together in a city for the first time—an experience that amplified the band’s creative bond and connected them with fellow North Carolina transplants in the city. This may well be your next favourite record.

@powerplantxx new single “Bridge of Sacrifice” leads the playlist in today’s @guardian “Bridge of sacrifice is a pivot into black metal, with Zhykharyev’s antic synth melodies and slashing garage-rock guitars now accompanied by eerie screams and drum-machine blastbeats tinny enough to evoke the frost-bitten demos that emerged from Norway in the early 90s.” The single foreshadows what’s to come on this rollercoaster of an album, out 13th March on @arcanedynamics

@powerplantxx , the solitary project of Ukraine-born, London-based Theo Zhykharyev, has today announced his new album, ‘Bridge of Sacrifice’ due out 13th March 2026 via @arcanedynamics and released the title track. The album opens with the ravenous “Bridge of Sacrifice,” which foreshadows what’s to come on this rollercoaster of a record. Quick guitars and percussion stabs crack the lock off gates and the song is released with its energy. On the new album, Zhykharyev once again rebrands and reinvents Powerplant as a gothic beast. Zhykharyev’s voice takes centre stage with resolute and dramatic singing, dialled in after years of touring. The familiar Gary Numan-esque synth or early Powerplant works is elaborated with orchestral strings, grand piano and heavenly choirs. Heavy and full drum sound replaces the vintage digital drum machine samples. The musical pallet is further expanded with moving cello performances by Hani Hooper, adding a grotesque cherry on top of this musical cake. Although the new release is styled in an eerie, extreme metal fashion, ‘Bridge of Sacrifice’ is Powerplant to its core. The album’s quest for avid genre exploration keeps the musical journey fresh, as it carries you through the depths and extremities of metal-punk, blackgaze, industrial and acoustic campfire folk. The album was mixed and mastered by Stanley Gravett in the heart of Hackney at Holy Mountain Studios. Powerplant’s sound is distinguished by its giddy bass, sizzling synth lines and melancholic vocal hooks. From the lo-fi synth-punk of 2019’s breakout debut album, ‘People in the Sun’ and the instrumental 2022 dungeon-synth release, ‘Stump Soup’ to the kaleidoscoping Grass EP (2023), and last year’s 80’s rock explorations on “Crashing Cars’ 7” and the Michael Mann-inspired Heat EP. Powerplant has brewed its strongest release yet. ‘Bridge of Sacrifice’ emerges from the cauldron - a fun, black metal infused journey through all that is heavy and gothic.

@mountaingoatsmusic 23rd full-length album ‘Through This Fire Across From Peter Balkan’ was released last month on Cadmean Dawn Records to some amazing reviews! Produced by the Mountain Goats’ multi-instrumentalist Matt Douglas, their latest album is a full-on musical featuring Lin-Manuel Miranda, The Replacements’ Tommy Stinson, harpist Mikaela Davis, and bassist Cameron Ralston. Drawing on the cryptic phrasing of its title, ‘Through This Fire Across From Peter Balkan’ tells the story of a small crew shipwrecked on a desert island, where three surviving members - an unnamed narrator, Captain Peter Balkan, and Adam - are plagued by diminishing resources and apocalyptic visions. These are tales of survival and desolation, brutality and tenderness, hard-earned wisdom and heaps of compassion, novelistic detail and shouted, wordless choruses that transcend language. In other words, these are Mountain Goats songs, further deepening a singular body of work now spanning over three decades The Mountain Goats will be heading to Europe and the UK in October 2026. Craig Finn (The Hold Steady) will be opening for the band on all dates, except Berlin. ‘Fen Creatures’ the stunning new album from Cambridge band, Fuzzy Lights @fuzzysnaps is out now everywhere via Meadows. On their new record, the band have created their most conceptually ambitious work to date - a meditation on environmental crisis that uses the folklore and history of East Anglia as a lens to examine humanity’s fractured relationship with the natural world. Where their previous album, Burials explored personal trauma and environmental collapse, Fen Creatures expands this vision into something far more sweeping and interconnected. The album operates across multiple historical timelines, from Iron Age hill forts to medieval plague houses, from Byron’s Romantic-era environmental warnings to the immediate threat of rising sea levels, creating a temporal tapestry that weaves ancient stories with contemporary concerns. Musically, the quintet, Rachel Watkins (vocals/violin), Xavier Watkins (guitar/electronics), Chris Rogers (guitar), Daniel Carney (bass), and Mark Blay (drums), have pushed deeper into experimental drone territories while maintaining the crystalline folk sensibilities that have become their signature. The result is their most atmospheric and immersive work to date, with vast sonic landscapes that mirror the fenland geography they’re documenting. The fenlands have always felt like a place where time moves differently, there’s something about the flatness, the way sound carries across the water, that makes you feel connected to all the voices that have passed through these landscapes. Fen Creatures is an invitation to reflect on our place within the natural world, to learn from the past, and to act decisively for a sustainable future. Fen Creatures promises to cement Fuzzy Lights’ reputation as one of Britain’s most vital contemporary folk acts. The album positions them firmly within the lineage of artists like Fairport Convention, Trees, and Comus who understood that engaging with tradition isn’t nostalgic escapism, but a way of accessing older wisdoms about how to live in the world. If you haven’t checked out their music yet, do it today!
