1 - “I think that there is a sense in a lot of places that work made by disabled people is of less quality than work made by abled people, which is such NONSENSE.” Digitally imposed over Jack, a white non-binary person with bright green hair and wearing a white t-shirt stands with their back to the camera under UV light, doing a morning stretch. They are surrounded by trinkets; a tiny pink flamingo, a book, leaves, a water bottle, a shiny pink love-heart shaped disco purse, and other nondescript things.
2 - Same image as before with this text digitally added: “It's also really important that disabled artists are given the space and the time and the ability to make work that isn't entirely about being disabled.“

Jack doesn’t care what you think you’ve heard - there’s no goblin in this show. They’re sorry you’ve been misled so terribly.
They’re just a nice, normal human being. And, quite frankly, it’s really strange that you’d believe otherwise...

GOBLIN is an honest, silly, confronting, funny, cathartic mashup of clown, new writing and Neo Futuristic based theatre. A solo piece exploring what it means to exist under constant scrutiny, examining the performative nature of trying to ‘fit in’ and growing up in the 1990’s under Section 28.
Jack Wakely is the Co-Artistic Director of Silent Faces Theatre (Godot is a Woman, A Clown Show About Rain, Follow Suit) and a member of Degenerate Fox (The Dirty Thirty)

This month in our #shufflingtheshelves series: another look at this fab playscript questioning the Becket Estate’s insistence only men can tread the boards in wait of the big man.
Here’s Silent Faces’ Jack giving us the low-down on gender, who gets to tell stories and the absurd distinctions of the ‘highbrow’ vs the ‘lowbrow’…

Delighted to run our second #ShufflingtheShelves feature, spotlighting amazing books in the backlist which you might have missed – here’s welcoming Jack from @silentfacesuk to tell us a bit about their ‘cheeky, geeky’ play Godot Is a Woman.
Nominated by @ayearofreadingtheworld , who says, ‘Hearing Jack Wakely talk about their discovery that Waiting for Godot can only be performed by men by law instantly piqued my interest in Godot Is a Woman. So many people would walk away when a door is slammed in their face like that; instead, Silent Faces turned the doorstep into a stage. Such a playful, creative and bold response.’
Head over to the site for an interview with Jack about what inspired the play. And a play trailer you’ll never forget. 🥾🥾

Yesterday, we received the most amazing fan mail. An incredible audience member who saw Godot is a Woman a couple of weeks ago sent us the amazing archive material that she has gathered from her experience of performing an all-female production of Waiting for Godot in 1991, including articles about the production and an astounding letter from the Becket estate itself expressing that the estate is ‘completely opposed’ to the production and claiming that their actions display an ‘appalling disrespect to the work of Samuel Beckett’… for performing WFG as women. Madness.
Thank you to all of the incredible women, non-binary and trans folk who have made art in the face of adversity and the status quo - you are AWESOME 🙌
Godot is a Woman is a tribute to those amazing people, and a call to arms to us all to keep going!! We’re on at @kingsheadtheatre until THIS SATURDAY! Tickets from link in bio
