On @bbcradio4 discussing Virginia Woolf (& my new book) - 100 years since Woolf's On Being Ill so alongside the brilliant @steinkedarcey I pick my fave lines of Woolf's to read from this beautiful reissue by @renardpress - also discuss parallels to my soilnets (muddied sonnets) rendered here as poem-sculpture. Full program (incl. announcing new climate change commission I'm presently involved in between Met Office, Exeter Uni & @guillemotpress .. hence the fuzzy line, zooming from Met Office HQ in Exeter.. 🌤) on BBC Sounds:

Soilnet 18
I keep a vial of soil beside my bed —
a tiny globe of cork to plug the glass.
Its scent uproots the thistles in my head
with grounding memories of mud and grass.
Some days, I find it hard to quarry on —
to excavate more timestone from this earth.
I snuff until my prickling thoughts are gone
and scrubland brain is lined alush with turf.
Each soil nub guides me with its nose for light —
a small brown nudge to see beyond the weeds.
They press like mine against the pane of night,
exhaling hope when browning heart-mulch bleeds.
So long as soil can’t breathe nor siltspawn be,
I’ll write to crack the code that sets us free.
@faberbooks (only 1 sonnet, still editing, rest more wild / experimental)

Such a delicious evening with @guilbertbaptiste and translator Trask Roberts at the iconic @bricklanebookshop last night – a few snaps here from a reading in French and English… Marseille might be out of reach this Friday, but Queer Marseille can come to you! Signed copies available while stocks last @bricklanebookshop in person and on our website 🙌
Wonderful to attend the launch of AT THE END OF THE SIDEWALKS, Trask Robert’s translation of the striking queer bildungsroman by @guilbertbaptiste , at @bricklanebookshop tonight. Trask and Baptiste had a lively discussion about the challenges of bringing the French original’s wordplay into a new language, showing that while some of the decisions a translator makes are invisible, others will deliberately ‘slap you in the face’. I was particularly struck by Trask’s comment that he had opted for a mix of British and American English so that, like the narrator, no reader ever feels entirely at home in the text. Great to celebrate this first translation of a living author from my lovely publisher @renardpress #readtheworld #bookstagram
Just a few hours to go until the launch of this fantastic novel by @guilbertbaptiste , who will be in conversation with his translator Trask Roberts @bricklanebookshop at 7 (tix on their homepage) – we’re getting in the mood, so here’s a glance inside to set the scene…
Expect to be on the edge of your seat and meet Marseille anew. 🚤 🌊 🍆 😢
