"Narcissism : Dazzle room" mixed-media / 2016 . [statement] This installation is one of a series of dazzle camouflage themed works the artist has been creating since 2013. ​ Dazzle camouflage was a type of ship camouflage used during World War I. As its name suggests, it was meant to dazzle and confuse the human eye. In an era where radar technology did not exist, an enemy vessel’s range and heading needed to be visually identified for targeting. The complex black and white patterns painted on ships with dazzle camouflage made it difficult to ascertain whether a target was moving closer or farther away and prevented accurate firing. ​ The person in the room covered with dazzle camouflage uploads selfies to social media while surrounded by a larger self representing narcissism. In an era where much communication occurs over social media, metrics such as likes and follows fulfill our desire for recognition; however, the ease of which we can obtain validation from others leads to the growth of this desire, and we attempt to satiate it using our self-image or “larger self.” The boundary between self and self-image is unconsciously blurred by dazzle camouflage, and as a result, we ourselves cease to recognize our own boundaries. #shigekimatsuyama #dazzle #dazzleroom #art #kunst #arte #installation #изобразительноеискусство #松山しげき #matsuyama

MORPHEUS - Exhibition at Mankovsky Gallery Stockholm until 14th of May. Artist in spotlight: Shigeki Matsuyama (Tokyo - Japan) Every beginning requires a shift in perception. Morpheus marks the opening of Mankovsky Gallery Stockholm, a space between states, where realities are shaped, questioned, and reimagined. The exhibition draws on the idea that perception is never fixed, but constructed through the frameworks that surround us: how art is curated, presented, and ultimately valued. Dreams resist control. They unfold unpredictably, revealing fragments of truth beneath what appears stable. Elsewhere, a choice is offered: remain within the familiar illusion, or step beyond it and see differently. Morpheus exists between these positions, where established structures can be questioned, and new perspectives begin to emerge. As a new- generation gallery entering the Stockholm art scene, Mankovsky resists narrow definitions and predictable narratives. Instead, Morpheus embraces multiplicity. It brings together a group of emerging artists whose practices are not only distinct, but indicative of a future still in formation. Working across materials, ideas, and visual languages, the exhibition does not seek cohesion. Instead, it treats distance, contrast, and tension as a curatorial method—allowing each practice to exist on its own terms while contributing to a wider dialogue. For us, curation is a way of navigating: creating space for new voices and unexpected encounters. Morpheus is a beginning shaped by openness, friction, and a belief that emerging artists have the capacity to redefine the structures that frame them.

It is also accessible via the link in my profile, so please feel free to use it. 🔗/aap-gallery/matsuyama2026_entry 【ステートメント】 普段私たちがネット上で目にするものは、アルゴリズムによる選別と、そこから生じるトレンド、バズ、フィードバックといった複数の要因によって形成されています。SNSでは「目立つもの」や「即座に理解されるもの」が優先的に提示され、そのように繰り返し表示される情報は、あたかも重要であるかのように感じられるものです。 私の代表作「Portrait of Dazzle」は2021年に発表した作品ですが、当時はコロナ禍でギャラリーに鑑賞者を招くことが困難だったこともあり、SNS等ネットを介して作品を見てもらうということも、重要な作品鑑賞の方法となっていました。そのような環境において私は、「目立つこと」や「即座に理解されること」を一つの重要な条件として制作しており、それは当時の状況において、作品を見てもらうための現実的な判断だと考えていました。 私の作品では、「インターネットやSNSの普及が現代人の心理や生活に与えた影響」を主なテーマの一つとしていますが、本展はそれを外側から観察するだけでなく、制作を行う私自身への影響をも、過去の作品制作を通じて問い直す試みでもあります。通常、作品制作時のアイデアの採用・不採用は、「視覚的要素」「コンセプト強度」「制作実現性」などが主な基準ではありますが、特にコロナ禍に制作・発表した「Portrait of Dazzle」では、作品の生産性や制作コスト、SNSの反応、マーケティング上の判断など、作品の本質的価値とは直接関係のない複数の要因が、アイデアの採否に影響を与えています。 個展タイトルのAlgorithmic Discretionとは、「人間に代わって、アルゴリズムが何を見せ、何を優先し、何を除外するかを決める」という意味の言葉です。価値が数値や瞬間的な反応と同じ基準で測られる現代において、本質的価値とは何なのか。本展は、『アルゴリズム』というテーマを、自身の制作プロセスを通して表現した実験的な展示です。私自身の内省的な側面も大きいため、鑑賞者の皆様におかれましては、単純に「新しいPortrait of Dazzle」としてお楽しみ頂ければ幸いです。 【展覧会概要】 松山しげき『Algorithmic Discretion II』 会期 : 2026年4月18日(土)-4月26日(日)※会期中無休 営業時間 : 12:00-19:00 (最終日は18:00まで) 会場 : @roidworksgallery 〒113-0034東京都文京区湯島4-6-12 湯島ハイタウンB棟1F TEL：03-3812-4712 /
