Soft skin, chapped lips (so kissable) draws on the spatial logic of staircases, zones suspended between public exposure and private interiority. Transitional places: sites of passage, hesitation, encounter. Lined with doors and peepholes, they offer observation without confirmation. A quiet voyeurism.
Staircases appear again and again in popular culture. They are places where someone waits outside a door a little too long. Where a long-anticipated date is pulled across the threshold by the collar. Where kisses happen on the cusp of fully entering the apartment. Between hallway and home, they carry a suspended charge, part exposure, part invitation. They are where desire begins… the first scene in a longer drama.
Across the installation, inanimate materials get tangled up with desire. A disassembled railing runs through the space, then reassembles into lathe turned wooden figures leaning and hinging into one another. Objects come alive through contact, through a body activating them, through use. A laser-cut rug traces where clothing has pooled on the floor. The works linger on how sexuality often rehearses itself through objects… doors, railings, fabrics, bedrooms, before it dares to find its way between people.
Soft skin, chapped lips (so kissable) borrows its title from three minutes of pop melodrama that frames desire as experiment, performance, spectacle. An invitation to cause a scene.
