The »Verfassungsschutz« of the federal state of Nordrhein-Westfalen (NRW) published a series of comics in 2009 to warn schoolchildren about the dangers of so-called extremism. Disturbingly, the intelligence service’s depiction of lived leftist counterculture appears both familiar and distant: familiar motifs that trigger considerable unease about intrusion into one’s own subcultural lifeworld mix with amusement at the nuances the agency clearly fails to grasp in its hilarious, woodcut-like attempts to demonise left-alternative subculture. Andi is on the verge of “slipping” into the antifa scene, only to be led back in the end to his democratic clique – instead of partying in occupied factories and chasing Nazis out of town. Lars Karl Becker took on the issue devoted to left-wing extremism by enlarging individual pages to A0 and working his way through them.
The works shown here are part of a larger compendium of Lars Karl Becker's examination.

The ‘Verfassungsschutz’ of the federal state of Nordrhein-Westfalen (NRW) published a series of comics in 2009 to warn schoolchildren about the dangers of so-called ‘extremisms’, claiming that left- and right-wing radicals are equally inhuman. The fact that an intelligence service involves itself in political education is usually something we associate with authoritarian regimes – and yet, here we are.
Lars Karl Becker took on the issue devoted to left-wing extremism by enlarging individual pages to A0 and working his way through them. Like an angry schoolchild, the artist rampaged across the pages, erasing and disguising content with additions and empty signifiers. There is nothing here to learn.

Faux historic handbill: SCHROETER & BERGER
Exhibition view: @forumstadtpark Nonference by @force_inc_music_works
»Hoelz« is a visual experiment that presses the ends of two historical films together: »Wolz – Leben und Verklärung eines deutschen Anarchisten« (GDR, 1973) and »Max Hölz. Ein deutsches Lehrstück« (BRD, 1972). The simultaneity evokes a state of perpetual feedback, where past and present oscillate in a continuous liminal space. In the film from the GDR, Max Hölz’s biography becomes a lesson in party discipline; in the West German television play, his role in the March Action of 1921 serves as a resonant space for the then-current debate about the RAF. The two historically inaccurate films no longer address their educational messages to their respective audiences and to the debates of the time in which they were produced. They only shout into each other. What remains is a bitter silence.
–My special thanks go to @gebrauchsgrafik3000 not only for the Faux historic handbill and @ezili.i.sabbah for the invitation–
