This January marks the 30th year since I moved to Australia. I was 26 years old and working as a Japanese language teacher. Back then, nobody (including myself) would’ve imagined that I’d live in this country for this long, let alone start an acting career that spans more than a quarter of a century. Life is weird, full of ups and downs and aging is inevitable. But, right now, I’m filled with gratitude to Australia for nurturing me for three bloody decades!
この1月でなんと、オーストラリアに来てから30年になります。日本語教師として26歳で来豪した時、こんなに長くこの国に住むなんて、ましてや四半世紀以上も英語の国で役者をやり続ける事になるなんて、自分でも予想してませんでした。人生は不思議の連続です。浮き沈みも激しく、しかも老いは止めようもありません。それはそれとして、30年もの間こんな奴を育ててくれたオーストラリアに、心からの感謝でいっぱいです。

This morning we did a show for high school students at 10:30am. I’d be lying if I said I was excited to get up early for that, but it was well worth it as they were such a lovely audience from public schools in Western Sydney. One boy who was sitting patiently at the far end of the front row, obviously not the best seat, came up to me after the Q&A session. He said he was moved to tears in the end although it didn’t usually happen when watching performances. His family was from Palestine, and what we said in the show, which is about the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and the resilience of the people, resonated in his heart in a special way thinking about what his relatives are experiencing right now.
This is why I do what I do. It’s the huge responsibility to tell the story as best as I can, and also the privilege to do so. Another moment in my career that I’ll treasure for the rest of my life. I’m full of gratitude.
