“It Starts with a Question” — @risd1877 President @crystalannwilliams ’ new video interview series — launched in October 2025 and has quickly become a rich editorial platform for conversations with thought leaders, art and design luminaries, alumni, and “friends of RISD” about issues surrounding contemporary art-making.
In the latest installment, Williams sits down with award-winning designer and RISD alum David Weeks (@shinerbot@davidweeksstudio ), widely considered the founding father of North American lighting design. Inspired by his Cubebot toy robot created 25 years ago, Weeks also recently returned to RISD’s industrial design department (@risdid ) to teach a Wintersession toy design course.
The episode’s varied discussion explores the potential of a studio critique, and the benefit of being able to give and receive constructive criticism for iterative projects in art, design, and scholarship. Watch the full episode on RISD’s YouTube channel!

This is my personal Storage Wars episode.
I was in LA this past weekend. I was working with an upholster a few years back that ended up moving his facility to Las Vegas. He called me a few before he left to ask me what he should do with my “stuff “. I wasn’t sure what parts and supplies he had of mine. I hastily organized a truck to pick up the items and bring them to a nearby storage container. That was 2 years ago.

Walking through the facility we now call home, I am emboldened to continue to add to the unexpected collection of products that we’ve created over the past 20 years. Please stop by and check it out. We’ll be the ones lighting up the corner of Park Ave & Washington, now located in the emerging, creative hub of Clinton Hill, Brooklyn.

A repurposed recycled Japanese cardboard plate I bought at @longhousereserve and was inspired by the simple form. I cut this shape out of a square to find form in form. #prototype #sketching #paperflower #paperplate #lighting @davidweeksstudio
