In the first of our publications for our special edition issue, Building Narratives (May 2026), Alaina Pert writes that the use of media to advance narratives that reinforce certain worldviews and values is a strategic way to build different types of power. While the power grab doesn’t usually happen overnight, it often happens as part of a process of shifting norms. As those norms shift, so do the narratives that become the framework for stories and messages we see circulating around us. Today we’re celebrating two of our amazing student staff. A huge shoutout to Jon Marvin (@jonmarvinbibo ) and Zariah (@shaw.dyyy ), recipients of the @concordiauniversity 's Engagement Awards! 🎉 The Concordia Engagement Awards recognize students, staff, and faculty for their outstanding contributions to student life, volunteerism, safety, and sustainability at the University. This year’s ceremony took place on April 15. Jon Marvin received the Volunteer Recognition Award for his work with @centrekapwa . Through initiatives like Kapwa Walk, he has created spaces across Montreal that foster belonging for Filipinx, migrant, LGBTQIA+, and racialized communities. 🫶 Zariah received the Sustainability Champion Award for her commitment to diversity and social equity. She has been actively involved with the @sdsa_concordia and co-created Roots and Recipes, a cookbook that highlights local sourcing, healthy eating, and cultural identity, now in its second volume. 🌱 Beyond the organizations and communities they are part of, we at the Office of Community Engagement and @shiftconcordia are so proud of you both! #ConcordiaUniversity #CommunityEngagement #SocialTransformation
