They came up with a really cool cry this year, but it took a good 20 minutes to get it right! 😅 They nailed it eventually! XD Ils ont trouvé un cool anthem cette année, mais il a fallu bien 20 minutes pour y arriver ! Au final : victory! 😂 #freedomschool #harambec #blackkidsmatter #blackyouthmatter

This initiative funded by @fdnblkcomm aims to strengthen and sustain Freedom School, a bilingual educational program dedicated to Black youth in Montreal. It provides a safe and affirming space for 12- to 18-year-olds, and its third session will take place this summer from July 27 to August 16. Together, our young people explore their identities, reclaim their history, and acquire tools to resist systemic oppression. And along the way, they take the opportunity to build their own little community rooted in care, support, and laughter. A quick shout-out to Kem, who serves as our model for this poster and again thank you @chekichui pour les photos L’initiative soutenue par @fdnblkcomm vise à renforcer et pérenniser Freedom School, un programme éducatif bilingue dédié aux jeunes Noir·e·s de Montréal.

It’s really hard to put into words how exciting it was to see our Freedom Schoolers again after nearly seven months apart for some of them. The photos don’t do justice to their shouts of joy, their embraces, their smiles, and their hugs. And you should have seen the look on the faces of their chaperones, @adama.p.kaba and @jade.eva.almeida , as they stood in awe of their little ones. On Friday, April 20, we had the chance to attend a workshop with @kelechnekoff : an opportunity to bring our young people together, spend a wonderful evening, and be inspired to think differently about our relationship with time, social justice, the world we want to create, and the sense of urgency. It was also a chance to catch up and get excited about the fact that summer is coming very soon. And with summer approaching, that means Freedom School Season 3, right? Right ? 😏 Stay tuned 🤩🤩 Thanks again to our amazing partner @shiftconcordia

On March 18, we had the incredible privilege of hosting @kelechnekoff for a conversation with our director, @jade.eva.almeida , about intergenerational resistance. And what a discussion it was! So, was there a professional photographer there that day? Yes. Are we still too excited and way too hyped to wait for the official photos? Also yes! But don’t worry! A meeting with Kelechi Okafor deserves several posts anyway. And we also have to share the workshop between Kelechi and our Freedom Schoolers! In any case, this public talk was worthy of a masterclass! Let’s talk about agreeing to come to Montreal in the winter! She wasn’t the only one to bravely face the cold with enthusiasm, though, because the audience turned out in full force! Not only was the room packed, but the audience’s questions were just as generous. We got to enjoy a signing session and a lot of heartfelt moments. Thanks again to @shiftconcordia for this extraordinary exchange. We can’t wait to see the official photos! Stay tuned Thank you @yazzy_monozygotic @sasha.reyora @samia.tarikoubola for the pictures !

In this discussion, Jade Almeida (Harambec) will engage @kelechnekoff in a conversation about intergenerational knowledge, healing, and resistance, drawing inspiration from Kelechi’s work and experiences. As Harambec continues to shape spaces for Black women and non-binary people in Montreal, this exchange will explore what can be learned from Kelechi’s multidisciplinary approach to storytelling, movement, and advocacy. Register : link in our bio The Harambec team and the SHIFT community @shiftconcordia will have the opportunity to reflect on new ways of strengthening intergenerational connections and fostering spaces of healing, joy, and liberation. How can mentorship programs lead to fostering young agents of change? How can youth-led approaches to leadership challenge traditional institutional tropes? Or—more succinctly—how do we empower young leaders? This panel will showcase youth-led initiatives grounded in broader justice frameworks, featuring visiting professor Magalie Quintal Marineau and Christine Qillasiq Lussier of la Chaire-réseau de recherche sur la jeunesse (CRJ), as well as Adama Kaba, Mariam Untiveros Métellus, and Jessyarth Lopez Bonet from our very own Freedom School Link to register in our bio
