Hitting the road this summer with WHEN WE WERE FERAL! First up: Boulder and Denver for two pre-launch events with writers from the 2025 Poets & Writers Get the Word Out cohort! I'll be with @lauragreen517 @brooklynstani @mirandarschmidt @kerrydonoghue in conversation with @vitcavage at @boulderbookstore! The next night we'll be reading together along with Dane Bahr for the @reading__den series. Book launch on pub date will be with @sarah.layden @goldenhourbooksindy. Then to Pittsburgh with @jolenemcilwain @penguinbookshop! Onto to NH (where I grew up and where the book is set) for an event with @brettannstanciu @stillnorthbooks. Back in the midwest for an event with my husband @cbh1000words at his hometown bookstore @viewpoint_books. Then you can catch me at the @columbusbookfestival in Ohio! And finally back east in DC with @chloeyelenamiller at @politicsprose and @andrew_bertaina's 804 Literary Salon! Hope to see you there! And a big thank you to all these wonderful independent bookstores for hosting me. I can't wait!

Readers want to know that your characters had lives before the opening of your book! This creates a sense of intimacy and scope. It makes the more real to us!Opening with the mention of a previous tragedy can add immediate curiosity for the reader! We want to know what happened and how it is affecting the main character.It’s a great way to give your character something in the background to contend with as the move forward in the story opening!@regal_house_publishing @shastagrant#writersofinstagram #writing #writingcommunity #literaryagent #queryingauthors

The one Record Store Day album I really wanted this year was the @caamp 10th anniversary edition. And while I love RSD I find it taps into my anxiety and tendency to adopt a scarcity mindset so it’s better for me to wait until the next morning to see what is available online. I’m so happy I was able to get this copy from @joseyrecords! It’s beautiful!

What a special weekend in Chicago! The @regal_house_publishing retreat did not disappoint! I loved meeting so many press mates and our publisher, Jaynie Royal. The readings and panels were incredible. Today we had a beautiful brunch at a riverside restaurant. And I even snuck in a ballet class at Joffrey before heading home. I didn’t take nearly enough photos but glad to have these pictures with @carolinebockauthor @miriamgershow @meganschik and @thewritingscott. Till next time, friends! ️
