We had a wonderful annual musicians’ retreat at the Harmonium Institute Gurukul last weekend, featuring performances of classical and semi-classical music—vocal, harmonium, tabla, and violin.
Music has the power to call us across traditions, and Andrew Shantz embodies that calling with rare devotion. Beginning as a jazz pianist, he found his path in Hindustani classical music, training for over a decade with masters such as Pt. Sanjoy Banerjee, Smt. Madhumita Saha, and Pt. Samar Saha.
His work has been recognized with awards from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts, but beyond accolades, what shines most is his commitment to learning, honoring, and sharing this music with others. Whether performing on harmonium, vocals, or in collaborative ensembles, Andrew’s artistry reminds us that tradition, when approached with humility and care, becomes a living bridge across cultures.
