On Wednesday, my father, Robert Sams, was one of the 26 Black veterans honored as part of the first-ever Juneteenth Honor Flight to Washington, DC. CNN interviewed him about his journey as a African American (Black American) veteran and Purple Heart recipient who fought for more than 50 years to receive 100% of his disability benefits, which he finally obtained two years ago. My mother passed away while fighting alongside my father for these benefits, and my older sister, with the support of myself and our little sister, carried the effort to the finish line.
Thank you to @cnn and @kokomodianne Dianne Gallagher for capturing my father's story and the stories of many other Black American veterans. Thank you to @honorflightnetwork for bringing the Black veterans to Washington, DC, and for their over 15 years of dedication to honoring our terminally ill U.S. military veterans. Thank you to @southwestair for safely transporting our veterans on this historic #juneteenth Honor Flight.
Happy Juneteenth to the Black veterans who fought for the rights of this country and still have to fight for their own rights in this country.
