Shadow Walls is thrilled to announce our participation in @upstateartweekend this year with ‘All are Welcome’ curated by Niama Safia Sandy
@___niama___ is a New York-based curator, producer, and multidisciplinary artist. Niama’s creative practice delves into the human story through the application and critical lenses of culture, healing, history, migration, music, race, and ritual.
All Are Welcome is grounded in the history of identity-based travel destinations in the Catskills versus the more intentional diversity and solidarity necessary in today’s world. In part a commemoration of the many resorts that acted as safe havens for Black, Jewish, Queer and other marginalized and vulnerable identity groups in the 20th Century at spaces like Peg Leg Bates’ Country Club, Casa Susanna, Grossinger’s Catskill Resort Hotel, this exhibition seeks to create a new space where the divisions that once passed as safe must give way to a more total experience. With this show, we are offering a space for our diverse community to proclaim a space for art, criticism, beauty, leisure, rest, and solidarity for all people.

overbeaten abaca pulp is bodily and fibrous. worked to a viscous tenderness, hardened into stony urns, fragments of text drift like breath, like prayer. sutures bind, rupture to ritual to repair—an invocation. lingering in the suspended instant of the pour, when the water is neither in one vessel nor the other, an ecstatic hovering in transit. in that threshold—between holding and release, between this world and the next—grief is radiant, unstable. language is a trickster, shifter, beckoning a closer look, a story the dead know.

Still finding the right words when words don’t feel sufficient in expressing gratitude towards the partnerships that have sustained us this past year. (Part 1) This year has been about building foundations both figuratively and very literally. Grounding into an intentional process, defining our values, and implementing them into every day practice.
I’ve been INCREDIBLY lucky to connect with collaborators that care so deeply about this place and have helped evince our potential, shape our identity and set the strong cornerstones and standards that will underpin our purpose for a long time to come. A true standout this year was working with @annelauresees , the brilliant curator of our summer show ‘Repair,’ and now dear friend. The entire show felt like a dream as Anne-Laure came in as an inimitable force, and this usually abandoned space teemed with life, breathtaking installations and extraordinary artists whose work I deeply admire. We met so many incredible visitors that week that have now become community. The care and alchemy of ‘Repair’ transmuted this space into another realm and lit sparks whose glow is still guiding us in these coldest, darkest days. Thank you Anne-Laure and every artist who trusted us with your ambitious work 💓✨

Happy 🌕 lit NYE from Shadow Walls. I’m still getting a reel together because I am immeasurably grateful to every collaborator and artist that brought their visions and infused this space with magic this year. It’s been surreal and beyond my wildest dreams. But meanwhile I want to say thank you to literally everyone here following along on our progress and especially to everyone taking my little polls and surveys and sharing your thoughts, I’m listening and it means so much to have your imprint here!
✨A big part of my past work, and now the design process here, is the idea of ‘consensus’ as defined as ‘feeling with.’ This is such a special and singular property with so much history and so many stories. In revitalizing her I am ‘feeling with’ her full history, everyone she brought joy to and created memories for. I’m ‘feeling with’ every past steward who came here with a dream. I’m ‘feeling with’ every artist, curator and collaborator who comes here with their own vision and magic. And I am ‘feeling with’ each one of you when you share your input.
Together we can form her new identity—a shared space, a collective space, a creative home. A space that inspires awe and joy, a place for both experimentation and comfort. I’m honored to be her current steward but this space is for all of us and can be a container for so many of our dreams and work, so thank you for being part of our journey, you are so appreciated! ✨
