We’re fundraising to recreate the Robert E. Smith mural that was recently covered. There’s a GoFundMe that’s live (and already well on its way to hitting the $15k goal!) There’s more detail on the fundraiser page, but we want you to know we’re trying to do this right - @springfieldarts is acting as fiscal sponsor, providing accountability and oversight. Any funds beyond what’s needed to recreate the mural will go to preserving and maintaining existing public art downtown. We hope you’ll consider contributing and sharing. Even a $5 contribution is a statement that our community cares about public art, and in particular, this special work.

No, the mural isn’t miraculously back up, sorry. This is an old photo. Here’s an update on the wall at 400 W Walnut. We talked to David, the owner of the building, Monday morning. He’s moving his business, @frommilitarytomillionaire into the building. The walls were painted to prep them for a patriotic mural he’s hired an artist to paint there. He’s a veteran and his business serves veterans and he was excited to invest in a big piece of art to honor them. He didn’t realize how much love there was for this mural and there were no restrictions from the city to prevent him from painting over it.  We’re not apologizing for him or defending what he did. It sucks. But what does a healthy community do next?  We connected with Nicole Brown, who had been working over the weekend to find potential locations for a mural, get access to the original painting it was based on, and get funding to recreate it. We told David we’re working to get the mural recreated and he said he wants to help. We think getting the mural painted again is really achievable.

The moment is a bigger opportunity to show how much our community cares about public art, renew interest in Robert E. Smith’s work and legacy, and start making changes that prevent incidents like this from happening.  We’d like the recreation of this mural to be a community effort. Maybe not in the actual painting (we’ll leave that to professionals), but in the funding and coordination. As soon as we can, we’ll be sharing a way for people to give to recreate the mural. Excess funds will be reserved for maintenance and restoration of other murals downtown. The funds will be managed by a trustworthy arts nonprofit. We think the best ending to this story is one where Robert E. Smith’s art gets a prominent place downtown again, a new mural honoring veterans joins the cityscape, and this moment is a turning point for how we treat public art downtown.

They’re painting it black when they need to be painting it back.

Some quick updates on the Robert E. Smith mural that was destroyed on Friday:
-People have shared who they believe the owner to be, but we haven’t seen anything that 100% confirms who is responsible. We also have not heard from the owner. The no-brainer choice for them is to apologize and work with the right people to restore the mural immediately. Local news will be sharing about this today and we’re hopeful that’s the path the owner takes. -@loomicandlebar_sgf , the business on the lower level, didn’t make the call on this and is bummed like the rest of us. Please show them some love because this is a headache for them. -The response to this has been nearly unanimous and the local art community has been buzzing all weekend about what to do next. Restoring the mural is step one. Together, we can do much more than that. We’re eager to collaborate wherever we can to restore this work of public art, celebrate Robert E. Smith’s creative legacy, preserve other similar works downtown, and see more public art created here. We’ll do our best to keep folks updated. This obviously sucks but there’s a way for us to turn this into a win together.

Robert E. Smith was an internationally recognized American folk artist who called Springfield, Missouri home and was a downtown fixture.
This mural was painted in 2000 by community members based on a painting of his depicting his memories of downtown Springfield.
In a 2011 book from Moon City Press offering a retrospective of his work and life, Carla Stine said
“Though Robert gained international fame as a folk artist, he remained true to his Midwestern roots. A stroll through downtown Springfield shows the deep imprint he left on the city, both in the murals and in the building bearing his name. Reinventing folk art on his own terms, he turned downtown Springfield into a canvas reflecting his own artistic vision. Even with his passing, Springfield belongs to Robert E. Smith. Robert’s work has enriched the lives of people all over the world, but in Springfield, Missouri, Robert himself sculpted a niche that gave shape to the culture of the community.” This is a heartbreaking reminder that what we don’t actively celebrate and preserve, we stand to lose. Keep the good alive 🧡

Our next Jubilee show is this Thursday. We’ll have @lamplightsongs @l.enabartels and @willchiles7 performing. Here’s a look at some of our past shows with @lilyseabird , @ellieschmidly , @briangeraldbulger , @lamplightsongs , and @pedrothelion . If you’ve never been, here’s what you can expect: -An unconventional venue. Jubilee shows are hosted in a sound-treated video production studio. No noisy bar, no one talking over the music. -Great music. These shows are a lot of work to put on and we don’t make money from them. We put them on to celebrate artists we love and want to share. -A live recording. We capture each set and publish them online after. We think of it as an extra perk for artists that choose to perform these intimate shows. -A chill vibe. For most shows, we have a bunch of seating and you can bring your own drinks. No back pain or bar tabs. Thursday, 1/29. Doors at 7PM. Please get tickets in advance if you can! See you there.
