May is Affordable Housing Month! This time serves as a powerful reminder that housing is the foundation upon which all other opportunities are built. At the San Francisco Mayor’s Office of Housing and Community Development, this work closely reflects our mission to support strong, inclusive communities by creating and preserving affordable housing, protecting residents from displacement, and promoting equitable access to opportunity for all San Franciscans. As we continue our celebration of Affordable Housing Month, we’re highlighting Shirley Chisholm Village – a pioneering model of inter-agency collaboration that transformed an underutilized 1.38-acre SFUSD site into 135 units of 100% affordable housing. Located in the Outer Sunset, this all-electric, sustainable development is the city’s first project specifically prioritized for educators and school district employees, targeting the "missing middle" households earning between 40% and 120% of the Area Median Income. Named after the legendary congresswoman and educator, the village offers residents high-end design, proximity to transit and parks, and comprehensive on-site services – including financial literacy, homeownership education, and youth programming – demonstrating how public land can be leveraged to honor and retain the essential workforce that supports the city's future. By successfully navigating the complexities of workforce-specific housing, Shirley Chisholm Village has paved the way for future projects, including the upcoming 750 Golden Gate (Brightwell West). It proved that that this brilliant blueprint is no longer an experiment, but the foundation for a citywide movement to ensure those who teach in and shape the future of San Francisco can afford to live there. Happy Affordable Housing Month! To celebrate, we’re highlighting 1064 Mission Street – a landmark in San Francisco’s mission to address homelessness. Since opening in 2023, this award-winning project has served as a blueprint for innovation, using housing legislation and modular construction to quickly deliver 256 units of permanent supportive housing. More than just a roof, 1064 Mission is a vibrant community service hub, housing the Maria X Martinez Health Resource Center, a culinary job training academy, vital on-site and in-home care for some of the City's most in-need residents, and so much more. This project is a powerful reminder that affordable housing is the bedrock of a healthy society. By providing stability, dignity, and integrated support, we empower our neighbors to thrive and build a more resilient, inclusive San Francisco for everyone! Today, we joined Mayor Lurie, City officials, and community partners to celebrate a historic milestone for the Bayview-Hunters Point community: the grand opening of Hunters View Phase III. This final affordable housing phase delivers 118 new homes, successfully completing the one-for-one replacement of all 267 former public housing units originally built in 1956. As the first site to break ground under the HOPE SF initiative, this multi-year revitalization has transformed aging infrastructure into a vibrant, mixed-income neighborhood. This project represents a deep investment in housing stability, ensuring that long-time residents can continue to thrive in safe, stable, and modern homes within the city they love. The site also features new public parks, a mixed-income childcare center, a Department of Public Health Wellness Center, and a recording studio, with the Bayview Hunters Point YMCA providing resident-focused services on-site. This transformation is a testament to the power of sustained partnership between the City, resident leaders, and non-profit and private developers. We are so grateful for all of our partners throughout this long journey who have been equally committed, who have enabled us to keep our promise to this special neighborhood, and who helped made this milestone possible! This month and every month, MOHCD honors the Asian, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander trailblazers, innovators, and everyday residents who have fought for a more just and inclusive San Francisco. Our city’s history is inseparable from the resilience of the AAPI community. From the pioneers who built our foundation, to the organizers currently fighting for housing justice, to our staff who ensure our policies and programs are implemented effectively, and the many community advocates for cultural preservation – your work powers the progress of our city. MOHCD is more than proud – we are committed. We remain dedicated to expanding affordable housing access for our AAPI neighbors, protecting cultural heritage and our collective history, and investing in the community-led movements that keep San Francisco vibrant. Together, we continue the work of building a city where every AAPI thrives, and we honor the legacy of those who continue to shape the landscape and fuel the spirit of San Francisco.

Today, we proudly joined our development partners to celebrate the Topping Out of 160 Freelon, marking a significant milestone in delivering 85 high-quality, affordable rental homes to the SOMA community. This vibrant new development will serve families earning between 30-60% of the Area Median Income (AMI), with approximately a quarter of the units dedicated to formerly homeless households and five units set aside for residents living with HIV. Designed to foster connection and stability, the building will feature a welcoming residential lobby, secure bicycle storage, an expansive community room, and beautiful outdoor spaces including a courtyard and a dedicated children’s play yard. Co-developed by @sfhdc_housing and Related California, with @cahillcontractors and @gcgbuilders at the helm for construction, and @lms_architects and @y.a.studio 's beautiful design, the project is on track for completion next summer. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to the entire team for their dedication in reaching this momentous stage for affordable housing in San Francisco! Photo credit: Alain McLaughlin

Last week, we joined Mission‑based community organizations, neighborhood advocates, and local development partners to celebrate the groundbreaking of a new 136‑unit permanent supportive housing (PSH) community located at 2970 16th Street in the Mission District. Also known as La Maravilla or the Marvel in the Mission, this development will provide 89 studio units and 47 one‑bedroom homes for adults exiting homelessness, along with substantial onsite services and community‑focused amenities. The nine‑story development will include a 1,500sqft Behavioral Health Services Center, resident case management offices, indoor and outdoor common spaces, and a secure landscaped courtyard designed to foster stability, wellness, and community connection. We are grateful for all of the partners – especially Mission Economic Development Agency (MEDA) and Mission Housing Development Corporation (MHDC) who are leading the project’s development – as well as the countless community advocates who have helped make this milestone possible. We look forward to watching La Maravilla take shape and welcome residents home in 2028. Photo credit: Alain McLaughlin
