I share my approach to coaching athletes like Yi Hou and Mei Mei, who have trusted me for years. When they come in with pain, I prioritize their safety and give them control by asking how they feel, whether they prefer knee or hip dominant movements, and how many sets they want to do. I explain how empowering athletes with choices—asking what they want to work on, how many sets they feel capable of, and how movements feel—transforms their recovery and performance. I talk about the incredible experience of delivering my baby in a hotel room in Thailand while visiting my family, and then flying back the next day to play in a game against my team. Despite being exhausted from the birth, I showed up professionally, started slow in the first half but had a great second half, and we won the game.
