I share a transformative moment from 10 years ago when I had coffee with a young national point guard who felt overlooked and frustrated. I asked him one simple question: If the coach gave you the starting position right now, are you confident enough to deliver? His silence was telling. That conversation became the turning point that shifted his entire mindset. Instead of blaming his environment, he started working on his craft. We talk about how Joe Kok How went on to play 20-plus minutes a game for KL Dragons, won championships, earned 2017 final MVP, and is now a national youth assistant coach. One question, one real conversationâthatâs what sport for living is all about.

âYour athlete trains hard. But performance isnât just built in the gym.
When parents ask me why their kid isnât performing better in games â I always ask three questions.
What is the sport coach saying?
How does your athlete approach the game?
Are they eating and sleeping well?
Because the best program means nothing without the full picture.
8 hours of sleep. Every night. Not just game day.
Palm size protein. Cup size vegetables. Fist size carbs. Every day.
Never try new food on game day.
Performance is built every day before game day.
Thatâs our responsibility. And yours too.

I share my approach to coaching athletes like Yi Hou and Mei Mei, who have trusted me for years. When they come in with pain, I prioritize their safety and give them control by asking how they feel, whether they prefer knee or hip dominant movements, and how many sets they want to do. I explain how empowering athletes with choicesâasking what they want to work on, how many sets they feel capable of, and how movements feelâtransforms their recovery and performance. This ten-year relationship is built on trust and athlete-centered coaching.

I share my journey representing Malaysia in international games, where I struggled with self-doubt and fear of letting others down. I talk about how I tried to fix everything alone, never asking for help because the culture taught me to just show up and perform. I explain how this isolation cost me my career and why I built SFLâa place designed to support athletes like I needed back then. I encourage you to talk to your coach, talk to your teammates, and ask for help, because thatâs not weaknessâitâs the smartest thing you can do.

We talk about how Malaysian sports culture often teaches athletes to hide injuries and never ask for help, leading to burnout and early retirement from sports. We discuss how SFL is changing this approach by creating a caring environment where athletes feel safe to communicate their wellness concerns without judgment. We emphasize that true strength comes from vulnerability and support, not from acting tough, and that athletes need to know their coaches care about them.
I talk about the incredible experience of delivering my baby in a hotel room in Thailand while visiting my family, and then flying back the next day to play in a game against my team. Despite being exhausted from the birth, I showed up professionally, started slow in the first half but had a great second half, and we won the game. I reflect on what it truly means to show up and be professional, both in basketball and in life.

My player never came to me after I yell at them. I thought that was their problem. Last week, a player kept coming late. Whole team agree with the call time. He kept breaking it. I confronted him in front of the team, then walked up to him privately after. He had no explanation. I told him, âDonât do it again or you are out.â He never came late again. When I walk up to him, I was disappointed, not angry. The players was never the problem. The coach who stopped showing up for the hard conversation is. Can do?

I share my journey after serving the national program for 12 years, reflecting on my final session last week. I talk about the unforgettable moment at the 2017 SEA Games in Merdeka Stadium, KL, and the lessons Iâve learned about how the work you invest in people never truly disappears. I emphasize that what matters most isnât titles or contracts, but the relationships and impact you build with your players. I express gratitude to every player Iâve worked with since 2013 and share my belief that Malaysia bolehâwe can do it.
