INTERNATIONAL PROFILE
@sethbinsted
Seth Beinsted grew up in the Appalachian mountains of Virginia and began his career as a newspaper photographer. He realised much later that his work isn’t interested in pure documentation or representation, but in how photography has the mysterious power to make perception visible to itself.
His aim is simple: to make images that are felt more than explained, that capture light revealing itself, trigger memory suddenly, and show the emotional impact light has on us before we can put it into words.
He prefers to shoot in crepuscular light, where the drama of light’s emergence and disappearance reveals something at once ancient and new. He has come to embrace this as a kind of magical realism.
Seth Binsted has taught aesthetics and philosophy at the New School for Social Research and at James Madison University. He works as a freelance photographer worldwide and in New York City, where he is currently based.
