𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗱𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗫𝗫𝗫𝗩𝗜 “𝗖𝗵𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗻” is part of Bernhard Lang’s 𝘔𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘥𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘺 series — a cycle of 40+ works written between 2007 and 2020.
Here, Chopin’s Études Op. 10 are taken apart and rebuilt through granular analysis: fragments are looped, filtered, modulated, and recomposed, transforming the original score into something entirely new. Repetition becomes both subject and engine, generating rhythm, texture, and form.
Rather than a traditional composition, 𝘔𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘥𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘺 𝘟𝘟𝘟𝘝𝘐 functions as a meta-composition — a virtual remix of Chopin, shaped by ideas of self-similarity (inspired by Douglas Hofstadter), the influence of György Ligeti, experimental film, turntablism, and live electronics.
In the hands of pianist Daan Vandewalle these recomposed études become a fascinating dissection of musical parameters.
