stocked and running a bar this evening because many moons ago, some naive local authority stooge at Southampton City Council saw it fit to grant me a license to party sneaking in tinnies will result in prompt confiscation and downing by the SSP alcohol security unit --- the program concludes this evening with Jake Muir, Alliyah Enyo, Fergus Clark, Dan Thorman and Llyn y Cwn we stress the importance of getting down there early (between 19:00-19:30) to catch the wonderful Dan Thorman (and possible warmup by DJ Bald Jesus) .... tickets are flying out so those on the fence advised to climb down off it --- "My heart is moved by all I cannot save." - Adrienne Rich @muirjake @alliyahenyo @tekaawitha @dthorman88 @llynycwnmusic @cgcsoundsystem @chewingglasscollective 🌒

The Voynich manuscript is an illustrated codex, hand-written in an unknown script referred to as Voynichese. The vellum on which it is written has been carbon-dated to the early 15th century (1404–1438). Stylistic analysis has indicated the manuscript may have been composed in Italy during the Italian Renaissance. The origins, authorship, and purpose of the manuscript are still debated, but currently scholars lack the translation(s) and context needed to either properly entertain or eliminate any of the possibilities. Hypotheses range from a script for a natural language or constructed language, an unreadable code, cypher, or other form of cryptography, or perhaps a hoax, reference work (i.e. folkloric index or compendium), glossolalia or work of fiction (e.g. science fantasy or mythopoeia, metafiction, speculative fiction). The manuscript has never been demonstrably deciphered, and none of the proposed hypotheses have been independently verified. The overall impression given by the surviving leaves of the manuscript is that it was meant to serve as a pharmacopoeia or to address topics in medieval or early modern medicine. However, the puzzling details of the illustrations have fuelled many theories about the book's origin, the contents of its text, and the purpose for which it was intended. The first section of the book is almost certainly herbal, but attempts have failed to identify the plants, either with actual specimens or with the stylised drawings of contemporaneous herbals. Astrological considerations frequently played a prominent role in herb gathering, bloodletting, and other medical procedures common during the likeliest dates of the manuscript. --- Program 10 commences TOMORROW with Jake Muir, Alliyah Enyo, Fergus Clark, Dan Thorman & Llyn y Cwn in the hallowed halls of St. Thomas the Martyr - the program will be paused immediately after this evening +++shoutout to Steve @industrialcoast  for getting Jake over on UK soil see you in the (pul)pit ⛪ --- "My heart is moved by all I cannot save." - Adrienne Rich @muirjake @alliyahenyo @tekaawitha @dthorman88 @llynycwnmusic @cgcsoundsystem @chewingglasscollective 🌒

The Great Sheep Panic of 1888 (or the Mysterious Oxfordshire Sheep Panic of 1888) was an event that occurred on 3 November 1888 across southern England, when tens of thousands of sheep fled from various fields across some 200 square miles of Oxfordshire. On the evening of 3 November 1888, at about eight o'clock, thousands of sheep had, by a simultaneous impulse, burst from their bonds, fields and dwellings and had been found the next morning, widely scattered, some of them still panting with terror under hedges, and many crowded into corners of fields, some miles from the fields they had been left in the previous evening. In the end, it had spread over 200 square miles (520 km2). The Times reported on 20 November 1888 that "malicious mischief was out of the question because a thousand men could not have frightened and released all these sheep." Another panic occurred in 1889, in Berkshire (southern England), not far from Reading. In 1921 the scientific journal 'Nature' noted that the night of 3 November 1888 had been "an intensely dark night, with occasional flashes of lightning" and explained that "panics have often occurred, for sheep are notoriously timid and nervous animals". --- Program 10 commences this coming Friday with Jake Muir, Alliyah Enyo, Fergus Clark, Dan Thorman & Llyn y Cwn in the hallowed halls of St. Thomas the Martyr - the program will be paused immediately after this evening +++shoutout to Steve @industrialcoast  for getting Jake over on UK soil --- "My heart is moved by all I cannot save." - Adrienne Rich @muirjake @alliyahenyo @tekaawitha @dthorman88 @llynycwnmusic @cgcsoundsystem @chewingglasscollective 🌒

The Hessdalen lights are unidentified lights which have been observed in a 12-kilometre-long (7.5 mi) stretch of the Hessdalen valley in rural central Norway periodically since at least the 1930s. They appear both by day and by night, and seem to float through and above the valley. They are usually bright white, yellow or red and can appear above and below the horizon. The duration of the phenomenon may be a few seconds to well over an hour. Sometimes the lights move with enormous speed; at other times they seem to sway slowly back and forth. On yet other occasions, they hover in mid‑air. One explanation attributes the phenomenon to an incompletely understood combustion of airborne dust from mining in the area. The analysis identified hydrogen, oxygen and other elements including titanium. It was thought this occurs in Hessdalen because of the large deposits of scandium there. One hypothesis put forward in 2010 suggests that the lights are formed by a cluster of macroscopic Coulomb crystals in a plasma produced by the ionization of air and dust by alpha particles during radon decay in the dusty atmosphere. Several physical properties including oscillation, geometric structure, and light spectrum, observed in the Hessdalen lights might be explained through a dust plasma model. Another hypothesis explains Hessdalen lights as a product of piezoelectricity generated under specific rock strains, because many crystal rocks in Hessdalen valley include quartz grains which produce an intense charge density. The phenomenon is of great interest to UFO theorists (including the late Dr. J. Allen Hynek) who believe that the lights are of extraterrestrial origin and could possibly be alien attempts at communication.

The Antikythera mechanism is an ancient Greek hand-powered orrery (model of the Solar System). It is the oldest known example of an analogue computer and could be used to predict astronomical positions and eclipses decades in advance. It could also be used to track the four-year cycle of athletic games similar to an olympiad, the cycle of the ancient Olympic Games. On the front face of the mechanism, there is a fixed ring dial representing the ecliptic, the twelve zodiacal signs marked off with equal 30-degree sectors. This matched with the Babylonian custom of assigning one twelfth of the ecliptic to each zodiac sign equally, even though the constellation boundaries were variable. Outside that dial is another ring which is rotatable, marked off with the months and days of the Sothic Egyptian calendar, twelve months of 30 days plus five intercalary days. The months are marked with the Egyptian names for the months transcribed into the Greek alphabet. The first task is to rotate the Egyptian calendar ring to match the current zodiac points. The Egyptian calendar ignored leap days, so it advanced through a full zodiac sign in about 120 years. The Antikythera mechanism is generally referred to as the first known analogue computer. The quality and complexity of the mechanism's manufacture suggests it must have had undiscovered predecessors during the Hellenistic period. Its construction relied on theories of astronomy and mathematics developed by Greek astronomers during the second century BC, and it is estimated to have been built in the late second century BC or the early first century BC. The artefact was among wreckage retrieved from a shipwreck off the coast of the Greek island Antikythera in 1901.
