Did you know we had harvest mice in London? 🐭
The harvest mouse became locally extinct in Ealing in 1979 as a result of habitat loss and fragmentation. They like long grasslands, farmland, woodland edges, reedbeds, and hedgerows 🌾
They are well known for the nests they make out of living woven grass usually found in dense vegetation
With much improved habitats, it is hoped that the population will thrive, grow, and expand. If you're interested in supporting the project, they are always looking for local people to help survey their nests in the winter period to monitor their progress - could this be you? 🤔
As they say at the project to the mice, make good choices! 🐁✨️
Thanks again to @thatvetsean and @ealingwildlifegroup for hosting such a wonderful day 🫶🏼

In April 2026, the Birds in Greenspaces survey launches, which is for both new and experienced birdwatchers of all ages. No binoculars required! 🐦
I'm super excited about this survey! For it to focus on both people and birds in urban spaces is so important to me. I can't wait to explore new areas, and learn more about the nature that lives there 🫶🏻
Urban green spaces hold many important cultural, social and leisure reasons for local communities whilst also supporting birds and other wildlife. This survey aims to further understand their benefits to our birds, whilst also working out how best to integrate management to benefit both birds and people in our urban areas.
There will be online videos and training courses to help you develop your bird ID skills. But keep your eyes peeled for any birds on your walks, and team up with your friends and local birders to share your learning together.
If you’d like to register your interest in taking part in the survey, you can find the link through our bio to sign up for our newsletter 🔗

Say hello to our newly named Mabel, pictured in the centre! One of the original five beavers we moved to our site in Ealing back in 2023, who now has a name! 🦫
Named after the main character in the inspiring film, Hoppers, which is about a young girl whose mind is transported into a robot beaver who wants to save a local habitat from destruction
We hosted the brilliant @pippiphooray1 and @bibbymoynihan to show them the work our beavers have done and to officially name Mabel! It was so thrilling, and we hope this film will bring more attention to beavers in the UK and inspire more budding naturalists 🫶🏻
What is your favourite thing about beavers, or what is your favourite part in the movie Hoppers? 🤔

Did you know that the UK's first and only Urban Beaver Officer can be found in London? Meet @senizdoesnature !
At The People's Ark, we like to platform people who are doing incredible work to protect our planet and its people 🌍
Şeniz’s journey into ecology and conservation began with a love for animals, evolution and the natural world. Today, her work spans rewilding, wildlife engagement, environmental education and advocating for greater inclusion within the environmental sector.
From researching White Storks at Knepp Estate to helping communities reconnect with nature in London, Şeniz reminds us that green skills are not just technical, they also include communication, care, accessibility and helping people feel they belong outdoors.
Follow @senizdoesnature to see more of their incredible work!
The butterflies are out! This large white seems to have found itself in a tricky spot, but luckily, I spotted it!🤞🏻
After doing a double take to check that I wasn't wishfully imagining a butterfly, I had to give it a hand (literally)
If you see a butterfly like this, then leaving them near a food source with nectar will help the refuel and get on their way 🦋
In this instance, the butterfly was trapped by something humans made, so I think it is only fair that a human helps it out so it can complete its life cycle 💚

For this year’s Earth Day, we’ve been on a mission to meet some of London’s urban eco heroes 🌎 In episode 2, @oliviamorelli pays a visit to the @ealingbeaverproject to meet with @thatvetsean and @senizdoesnature and let's just say you might be surprised when you hear about the many benefits of living alongside beavers! Read more at the link in bio.
If you're inside on Earth Day, get outside for Beaver Sunday! 💫 (Happy Earth Day too 🌍)
Can't wait for this one - a very relaxed afternoon in the sun with the amazing @ealingbeaverproject and @peoplesark 🐞

Meet Şeniz - the UK’s first Urban Beaver Officer🌿🐾
On Earth Day today, we’re highlighting a University of Brighton Ecology and Conservation graduate bringing beavers back into the heart of London - and building a career around the idea that cities and nature can work together! 🌱🌍
Şeniz is based at the @ealingbeaverproject in West London, where she’s helping lead the transformation of a 10-hectare site into a thriving wetland. Flood risk is being reduced, biodiversity is returning, and water quality is improving - all thanks to the beavers. 🦫✨
Her work sits between ecology and community - monitoring environmental change while also leading walks, safaris and public events that bring thousands of people into direct contact with urban wildlife.
For Şeniz, it’s about showing what she believes in: that nature isn’t separate from city life - it’s part of it 💙

On saturday, we spent the day with the amazing @senizdoesnature from the Ealing Beaver Project learning how these incredible creatures shape entire ecosystems; they’re basically tiny architects with big environmental impact 🦫❤️
5 facts about beavers:
1. They’re native (and came back recently) The UK’s beavers are the Eurasian beaver, which lived here until they were hunted to extinction around the 1500s. They’ve been reintroduced over the last couple of decades in places like Scotland, Devon, and London.
2. Nature’s engineers Beavers build dams, canals, and lodges. This slows water flow, reduces flooding downstream, and creates wetlands that support tons of wildlife.
3. Tree felling experts Those famous orange teeth? They’re super strong and constantly growing. Beavers can fell small trees overnight and larger ones over several nights.
4. Family life matters Beavers live in family groups with a breeding pair and their young from the last couple of years. They’re very territorial.
5. They help fight climate change By creating wetlands, beavers help store carbon, improve water quality, and make landscapes more resilient to droughts and floods.
We're excited to welcome Şeniz Mustafa as Butterfly Conservation's newest ambassador! 🎉
Şeniz is an Urban Beaver Officer at @ealingbeaverproject , conservationist, and former member of our first-ever Youth Panel. She is a passionate advocate for inclusion in conservation, running workshops, giving talks, creating content and supporting engagement projects to better connect people from lots of different backgrounds to nature.
We spoke to Şeniz about beavers, meeting people where they are, and being a champion for less heard voices in conservation - link in our bio 🔗

Did you know this about beavers? 🤔
🏊♀️ Beavers can hold their breath up to 15 minutes, which allows them to escape predators, build underwater entrances to their lodges, and more
🦷 The front of their incisors are coated in iron extracted from their diet that makes their teeth strong for cutting through bark, tree trunks, and branches
🌊 Beavers build dams to raise the water level high enough for them to hide, which holds water in one location, reducing flooding risk downstream
⚖️ Beavers are the world's second largest rodent, with the Eurasian beaver being able to weigh up to 30 kg and be up to 3ft 3 inches (tail included)
👁 Beavers have a third eyelid called a nictitating membrane that protects their eyes and maintains their vision underwater
🐸 Beavers are ecosystem engineers that create complex wetland habitats that support a wide range of species, improve water storage, and provide dead wood that supports invertebrates
📍Want to see this in person? Head over to the UK's only fully accessible urban project located in West London. Our site is open 24/7, and we have a range of activities available for you to engage with more to follow this week (link in our bio)
