Before Cannery Row 🐟 became what people know today, Monterey’s Japanese American community helped shape the waterfront, fishing industry and cultural identity of the peninsula 🌊
This year also marks 100 years of the historic Japanese American Citizens League Hall, the oldest continuously used Japanese community center in the U.S.
Today, visitors can still experience the lasting impact of Monterey’s Japanese American community through places like the historic JACL Hall, local businesses around Cannery Row and Fisherman’s Wharf, and coastal sites like Point Lobos, home to one of the area’s original fisheries.
This story is part of Monterey 1000, a series exploring the people, places and histories that shaped Monterey County.

This is your sign to see Monterey from a different point of view. 🤿🌊
Beneath the surface, Monterey Bay opens up into kelp forests, underwater canyons and a world of marine life that brings divers here from around the globe.
As you dive, keep a safe distance from wildlife, avoid touching marine life or reefs, and help protect the ocean that makes this place unforgettable.
Send this to the person who would brave the cold water with you.

This Mother’s Day, we’re celebrating all moms, including the ones with flippers. 🦭
Harbor seal pupping season is happening along the Monterey Peninsula, and the best way to enjoy these little ones is from a safe distance. Moms may leave pups resting on shore while they hunt, so a pup alone on the beach does not always mean it needs help.
Take the right path while you explore:
🌊 Keep your distance
🐾 Keep dogs leashed and away from wildlife
🤫 Stay quiet
📸 Use your zoom, not your feet
🚫 Never touch, feed or move a pup
The cuteness is real. So is our responsibility to protect it.

A Mother’s Day weekend does not have to be complicated to feel thoughtful. 🌿
Breakfast at @deetjensbigsurinn , a coastal hike to Partington Cove and time together in Big Sur is a pretty strong start.
From there, add what fits her best: brunch, wine tasting, local art, a garden stroll, a spa day, a scenic drive or an overnight stay.
