At @sxsw , UC Berkeley Haas professional faculty members @drsaharyousef and @section_ai CEO Greg Shove faced off for a timely debate: Is AI your most powerful productivity tool… or a shortcut to cognitive decline?
Sahar Yousef shared startling initial findings from new and unpublished research that serves as a warning about the impact of AI on our brains and our social well-being:
• A large percentage of people are experiencing something called “cognitive surrender,” where they are opting out of thinking completely and letting AI drive their decisions.
• Those who are already digitally addicted (e.g. to their smartphones or social media) are 30% more likely to “cognitively surrender” and become addicted to AI.
• People who are more lonely and are missing a sense of purpose in their life are more likely to develop a maladaptive emotional connection to AI.
Greg Shove, the CEO of an AI transformation company, made the case that AI is essential to business, but must be used in a way where human judgment and discernment remain in the driver seat.
The session was completely packed as Shove and Yousef grappled with the existential, while also giving practical advice to keep your brain sharp and business competitive as AI permeates everything around us.
