Second Fig

Grieve and Groove Open Mic is a night of healing through music and poetry focused on personal and collective grief. The night is open to anyone to share songs, poetry, or any form of art that draws from one’s well of grief to provide spiritual sustenance and catharsis to the self and community. ALYAKIM (aka Mikayla Brown) and Second Fig will perform with two highlighted 30 minute sets. ALYAKIM aka Mikayla Brown is an imaginative, vibrant singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Oakland who’s backed by a full band of rhythmic and dynamic musicians. Second Fig is an up and coming act led by Liz Gobbo an ethereal harpist and songwriter who focuses on powerful lyrics channeling political awareness and brings a musical style that moves listeners to an essential spirituality. There will be an optional quiet writing session from 5:00pm-6:00pm where poets can perfect pieces or where non-performers can take up space to write for their wellbeing and enrichment. The open mic is scheduled from 6:00-9:00pm (signups 5:30pm), but may go as late as 10pm depending on the number of performers. Grieve and Groove Open Mic is a concept of intentionality in regards to sharing wounds and strengthening personal and collective bonds in order to gain traction in our need to heal the often unaddressed. The night will be hosted by Sarai Schwartz a Korean-Jewish genderqueer singer-songwriter who’s performed across the bay with songs about love, politics, grief and joy. The open mic will be $10 (no one turned away for lack of funds), but it also highly encourages further donations which will go towards featured performers and Spire. the Church.
