The Second Amendment Foundation, together with the NRA, Firearms Policy Coalition, and private plaintiffs, has filed McDonald v. Katz challenging Virginia’s newly enacted ban on ‘assault firearms’ and magazines capable of holding more than 15 rounds. The law, signed today and effective July 1, 2026, criminalizes possession and transfer of commonly owned semiautomatic rifles with common features and standard-capacity magazines. SAF argues these arms are in common use for lawful purposes and cannot be banned under the Second Amendment.

Hearing Live Broadcast May 14th: The Tiahrt Amendment is a series of provisions attached to U.S. Department of Justice appropriations bills since 2003. It restricts the ATF and the FBI in how they handle firearms trace data, background check records, and dealer information.
Key Provisions:
- The ATF's National Tracing Center cannot release detailed information from its firearms trace database (which tracks where crime guns were originally sold) to anyone except law enforcement or prosecutors for specific criminal investigations. This blocks use by researchers, cities, states, the public, or in civil lawsuits against gun manufacturers or dealers.
- The FBI must destroy most approved background check records within 24 hours.
- The ATF cannot require gun dealers to conduct or submit regular physical inventories of their stock while in business.

🚨🚨🚨ATF has posted its revised 4473 draft. We are looking through it in detail.
