Sermon Text: John 6:15-35
Title of the Sermon: Feasting in the Wilderness
The prophesied prophet Moses spoke of is here. The crowd recognized him as Jesus after seeing the sign of the feeding of 5000 men. Christ is not swayed by the desire of the glory from men but is content in the glory from God. This is the right way for man demonstrated by the Second Adam. Earthly glory will not satisfy the soul; only the glory from above does. Christ is the bread of life; He is the glory of God – given for the life of the world and He is able to save to the uttermost. We need saving; we are being saved. We are in exile, sojourning to the promised land; we feast on heavenly supply on this journey.
Man wants to live forever; eternity is in our hearts. We long for it. But in Adam’s curse, our sinful flesh would want eternity on our terms. We are selfish creatures, thinking we ought to be autonomous from any outside rule or authority. Our culture idolizes human autonomy, but it is a fool’s dream. Hoping in the goodness of man to prevail is like hoping that black could become white, that wrong can become right, that false can become true, that negative can become positive, that man can become women. The good news of God’s revelation is that we know that eternity exists and there is a way to enter with great hope, joy and peace. That point of entry is in Christ alone. Entering eternity rejecting Christ is the most devastating thing a soul can do; if you hear His voice today, do not harden your hearts but believe in Christ. Stop pretending to be fine; start believing.
Sermon Text: John 6:1-15
Title of the Sermon: The King of Heaven Provides
Recap/Main Point: Recall how in our last sermon Christ challenged the Pharisees’ misplaced hope in Moses because Moses spoke of Jesus. It is no coincidence the John the Apostle chooses to give us an account of Jesus the Prophet from God feeding a multitude of people miraculously directly after. But like many of the Israelites in the wilderness who
had their fill of mana apart from faith, many today see the signs of Jesus apart from faith. Sinners seek first the fulfillment of fleshly desires but those who belong to the Lord, delight
to listen to Him. Christ and every word He speaks is more precious than the food we need to survive. Yahweh provides the food we need and man is not meant to live on bread alone.
Closing. Christ is seated on His heavenly throne at the right hand of the Father having fulfilled the law and overthrown the old order of shadows and types. He promises to bring
that heavenly city down to earth and dwell with us forever. May all His enemies be made a footstool for His feet! May His Kingdom Come! May His will be done on earth as it is in heaven!
Ever thought about the difference between the American and French revolutions? This short book is an excellent early 19th century witness to the blessed volitions of the American ‘revolutionaries’ in contrast with the infinitely Godless maxims of the French. The one inspired to preserve and defend natural and good law and the other to abondon such boundaries by whatever hellish terrors necessary. Let it never be said the one justified or mirrored the other; they were infinately different. This short book was originally penned by the German Gentz, translated by none other than our own President John Quincy Adams.
“The Americans were wise enough to circumscribe themselves within the bounds, which right, on one side, and the nature of things, on the other, had drawn round them. The French in their giddiness no longer acknowledged the prescriptions of the clearest right, nor the prescriptions of nature. They were so proud as to think they could bend impossibility itself, under the arm of their violence,— and so daring that they thought the clearest right must yield to the maxims of their arbitrary will.”h
We’d love to have you at VRBC in Poughkeepsie. Your soul needs food too! Man is not made to live on bread alone but on every word that proceeds from our Father in heaven.
