Dass Australien eine höchst lebendige Musikszene zu bieten hat, seht ihr spätestens, wenn ihr auf Bandcamp die Suchergebnisse nach Ländern filtert. So bin ich letztes Jahr auf Second Idol gestoßen, eine Band aus Sydney um Sängerin Kate Farquharson – Tochter von Einwanderern und in der Kleinstadt Kempsey in New South Wales aufgewachsen. Das Zuhören macht richtig viel Freude, denn die Band spielt eine explosive Mischung aus Grunge, Post-Punk und Goth-Rock. Die Musik von Second Idol ist introvertiert, nachdenklich und gleichzeitig auch wütend. Damit stehen sie exemplarisch für eine neue Generation von Szene-Bands, die etwas zu sagen haben. Seit ungefähr zehn Jahren ist die in Moskau geborene und nach Kanada ausgewanderte Pianistin und Sängerin Anastasia Minster aus den Neoklassik-Playlists nicht mehr wegzudenken. Mit ihrer kristallklaren Stimme ergründet sie die menschliche Psyche, lässt sich in ihren Texten aber gerne auch von Filmklassikern und der Mythologie inspirieren. Bisher erschienen drei Alben, die ihr auf den Streamingplattformen und auf Bandcamp finden könnt. Das aufwendigste Album ist ihr aktuellstes Werk „Song Of Songs“ aus dem Jahr 2024 - bei dem sie mit dem Canadian Studio Symphony Orchestra zusammengearbeitet hat. Ihre Alben offenbaren eine tiefe Emotionalität, während die oft melancholische Atmosphäre mich einerseits einnimmt, andererseits aber auch beruhigend wirkt. „Irgendwann kommt alles zurück“? Eine Tatsache, die mich als Kind der 90er-Jahre mehr als freut, da in den letzten Jahren der gute alte Grunge ein kleines Comeback feiert. Ein Beispiel dafür ist die britische Band Zilch. Alte Nirvana-Fans kommen bei Zilch auf ihre Kosten: Die Melodien sind catchy, die gitarrenorientierten Songs zwischen Punk und Alternative Rock laden zum Tanzen ein. Die aktuelle EP „Cognitive Distortions“ erschien im Juli 2025 und behandelt den Umgang mit einer toxischen Beziehung. Dabei ist die Stimmung der Songs durchgehend energiegeladen und die Refrains sind gut mitsingbar. Was denkt ihr? Braucht die heutige Musiklandschaft wieder mehr Grunge? Mongrel tour done 💥🥀 Thank you to all the ~250 people who bought tickets and who rocked up to our shows. A number of times, we were quite overwhelmed by the response. This has been our biggest and most fulfilling tour to date. Heartfelt thanks to everyone who grabbed presale tickets. In these rocky times, presales make so much difference and give confidence to both bands and venues. Thank you to all the friends and family who put us up while we were on the road and to those who kept us fed and watered! Thanks to the venues, all the people who bought swathes of merch, the amazing soundies we worked with and all the bands that we wrangled together.
