Friends, Countrymen, IFTA Members, lend me your...eyes.
I come to praise my friends and colleagues.
(If you're not an IFTA member, please enjoy my BTS photos and keep an eye out for the film later in the year)
A little while ago I had the pleasure of working with some absolute gems on a film called Aontas.
Some of those gems are in contention for an IFTA. Allow me to plead their case...
Pics 1,2 -
Damian McCann and Sarah Gordon are the geniuses behind Aontas. I've seen the film 5 times (It's not often you get to play a part in a film that is as good as this) and I still see new joys every time. They wrote a hell of a script.
Damian did an unbelievable job directing - he's an absolute gent to work with, and a real film nerd so everything has an intention behind it. But he is also completely open to collaboration. An actor's dream.
Pic 3
Carrie Crowley (Actress in a leading role)
Every time I watch Aontas I am blown away by Carrie's performance. Her role in An Cailín Ciúin made half the country want her to be their adoptive mother, and this role is just so different - and she is phenomenal. If she gets a nomination, she'll likely be up against a Golden Globe winner, but sure we'll cross that bridge when we come to it!
Pic 4
Bríd Brennan (Actress in a supporting role)
It is a joy for me to see one of the nicest women in the entire world playing a grouch (and doing it so well). But Cáit is layered, and behind the gruff exterior is a wounded woman...who is also very funny. Not Damian and Sarah's first time to work with Bríd, they made the smart decision to tap into her natural hilarious side!
Pic 5
Eva-Jane Gaffney (Actress in a supporting role)
Eva-Jane's character has the most to lose out of this planned heist. For self preservation, she keeps other characters at bay. The scene where she finally lays her cards on the table and we learn what is going on really moves me, and EJ plays it brilliantly.
(Also, she had to put up with me playing her husband - surely she deserves an award for patience if nothing else??)
[CONTINUED IN THE COMMENTS....]
Whats the under the Christmas tree??
Bruce Willis, one loose M'iníon , An Cailín Ciúin and two sexy gobshites.

A couple of weeks ago I was woken up to the most incredible news that it took my tired brain a while to get around (and I still can’t quite get my head around it) To be nominated for an Irish Times Theatre Award is an incredible honour.
This is going to sound a bit like an acceptance speech, but because my chances of winning are so low (Have you seen the name of the other nominees?? It’s like the three high kings of Irish Theatre plus bozo!) I would like to take this opportunity to thank some people because I have been very fortunate to work with and learn from *loads* of incredible people since I first attended Dixie Patterson’s drama classes in the hall in Glenties about 35 years ago…
Speaking of classes, big thanks go to all my teachers along the way - primary school teachers who put up with my antics - one told my parents during a parent-teacher meeting “If I mention an animal in class and he becomes that animal” (the warning signs were there I suppose), as an awkward teen I had my interest piqued by Tony at the Backstage Academy of Performing Arts; then as a still awkward teen it’s safe to say that my life path was completely altered by Max, Andrew, Sonia, and Pete at Galway Youth Theatre; and some years later by George, Steve, Kirsty et all at The Oxford School of Drama. A special thanks to Max also who was pivotal in the transition between youth theatre shows and actual professional shows (what a thrill to get to act and to get paid for it!) with the fantastic opportunities he gave me to explore the writings of Beckett, Marlowe, Lorca and Tennessee Williams with Theatrecorp. Love to some other early collaborators in the world of theatre, Jessica, Mike and Sean. And Mike Diskin from the Town Hall Theatre, who was always keen to support young theatre makers in Galway and who has left Galway so much richer, and is greatly missed. Roinnt mhaith comhlachtaí Ghaeilge chomh maith a thug deiseanna dom - An Taibhdhearc, Fíbín, Darach Mac Con Iomaire. (A number of Irish language companies that have supported me by means of employment)....

Have been meaning to get a new headshot for years, and then a very sound director that I was working with asked if he could take my photo with his beautiful medium format film camera...
"Oh I suppose...!"
Go raibh míle maith agat @mccann_do , fear uasal!
Got the great news over the weekend that the lovely short film that I am delighted to have been a part of "A Better You" had won three awards at the Sapporo International Short Film Festival!
Best Production Design (well done @tara_like_the_hill whose work the jury compared to 1984 and Terry Gilliam's Brazil! )
The special Jury Award (well done @e4monnmurphy who dreamed up the idea in his brain, carved it out through sweat and tears, and brought it into being by leading a team of beautiful humans around a film set last year, and also well done to Quintin @army_of_id who was there at the rudder, the helm, the sail, scrubbing the decks or whatever was necessary!)
And also an award for me for Best Actor, which I think is my first award for acting 😁 Of course I had to wear my tux for my acceptance video filmed in my living room!! Kudos to @hannahmam and @yuphrum for being beautiful to work with, and to the whole team of legends xxxxxxxxxxxx

Came across this really nice A4 promo flyer for Kings (2007).
This was an incredible job to get, and one that really opened my eyes to the plight of the emigrant Irish. Kings tells the story of six lads who emigrate to London in search of work and opportunity. Later in life they find themselves brought together by a tragedy, and not feeling at home in London or in the Ireland that had changed in their absence. The reception that the film got at film festivals around the world showed the universality of the situation, with locals saying- "This is our story".
Adapted from the play The Kings of Kilburn High Road, written by Jimmy Murphy.
Directed by Tom Collins.

P.s. that is my own hair, they just put some curlers in it in order to Meaney-ise it!
