Based in Brooklyn, New York, Scott VanderVoort’s work spans monumental sculpture, intimate studio forms, and a painting discipline that traces the same tectonic lines and emotional undercurrents found in his three-dimensional pieces.

Scott VanderVoort begins with the raw intelligence of the earth itself - limestone, steel, burnt timber, and salvaged metal coaxed into form with a reverence that borders on ritual.

My Alphabet Collection includes both paintings and sculpture constructed around a self-defined “alphabet” - a visual system that pairs circles and squares to investigate the range of possibilities within these two fundamental shapes. A square cinder block with the center cut away, commonly used in architecture, became my departure point from where this language would emerge - a basic building material I found while living in Bali. There was something that lured me in about the basic geometry, the positive and negative, but also how familiar and accepted it was as a form and to now alter its perceived value and beauty was my goal.
By following this framework, I have set clear boundaries that guide my results and avoid unnecessary complexity within the work.

Upon a recent visit to Egypt, I experienced the country’s rich history, archaeological wonders, and sculptural beauty. I was inspired by the extraordinary level of craftsmanship and beauty in the temple and tomb carvings, sculptures, and hieroglyphs, which reflected a deep sensitivity to and understanding of light, color, and materiality. Arriving at the pyramids was like a dream. As you finally see them up close in person, they move off into the distance like solo mountains clustered together. The idea that man has made them becomes incomprehensible - the effort, the manpower, the vision. Thousands and thousands of stacked blocks fill your eyes of what was once the epicenter of civilization and architectural genius.
Now back in the Studio, I often reflect on the journey and how deeply it inspired and motivated me to continue exploring and sharing stories through materials and stones.

Behind the scenes at a recent private residence commission in Las Vegas, Nevada. This was a collaboration between Scott VanderVoort Studio and @rockandvilla , the dynamite Mallorcan design duo of Stefan Relic and Paulo Valcic.
Seen here, we placed a series of limestone sculptures at the residence’s front entrance, enveloped by lush greenery and a stunning double door entrance creating an everlasting first impression.
It was an honor to be discovered by @jasonstrauss and given the opportunity to create a site-specific limestone work at his dream home, amidst the unique light and weather patterns of the Mojave Desert.

My sculptures have always been inspired by the earth and stand as a reflection of its raw intelligence—materials shaped through time, tension and the elemental forces of Mother Nature as my creative partner, all around the world.
Bali is close to my heart and deeply integral to my practice. I’ve spent extended periods living on the island, teaching design-led bamboo workshops, and learning hands-on old fabrication techniques. Through it I cultivated a nuanced relationship with Indonesian material, labor and community. I am often called to return to its natural beauty and will be working from my stone-carving studio outside Ubud in the coming months.

Designed and created through an intensive study of landscape, scale, and elemental forces, the installation by Scott VanderVoort Studio, on view at the Luo Shan Feng Art Festival in Taiwan, reflects a considered balance between material precision and environmental responsiveness. Organized through a series of lenses, the installation remains in active dialogue with wind, sea, and shifting light throughout the exhibition - its form revealing the intricacies of craft and design as conditions evolve.

“I wanted a studio where I could step
back far enough to really see the work—
and where the light tells the truth. It
sets the conditions for the next body of
work.”
