I missed my chance in my younger days to see the Beastie Boys live. I’m not entirely sure why. Maybe I thought they’d be around forever. Maybe I reached a point where I (incorrectly) assumed they were a band I liked in my youth and I had grown out of them. At any rate, by the time I realized my mistake, it was too late. I missed my chance. The very sad and untimely passing of MCA took them away from us. Well, last night I got as close to a make up as I’m gonna get. I got to see @miked perform, with his sons operating as his back up band, in a small performance in a converted high school gymnasium in South Pasadena. He performed mostly brand new material, most of which I didn’t know because it hasn’t even been released yet. But it was awesome. He finished his set with So What’cha want and the crowd went absolutely ballistic, including the very amusing smattering of celebrities in attendance, and I got to feel like I was 17 again for a small amount of time.

Happy 100th birthday to David Attenborough, whose life and career has inspired me a thousand times over. I’d be hard pressed to think of many people who has done more to broaden the reach of human understanding and empathy. The world is a much more complex and interesting place than I could have ever imagined.

After many years of showing in the same handful of cities, I’ve been making a concentrated effort more recently to get my work into some new places. I was very happy to be invited to show a couple of brand new pieces at @rlsart in Charleston, South Carolina, where these two guys will be on display in their show “Beyond Belief” alongside some really fantastic work by a bunch of super skilled artists who all make me look a wee bit sloppy in comparison. I’m especially happy to finally get to show with my old Boston pal @juliebcreative whose work I’ve been a fan of for literally ages. So folks, if you happen to be in the Charleston area, make sure you check it out!

I’m excited to show my work in some new places this month. You can catch a few of my paintings in “Better Together,” a show opening today, May 1st at @paradigmgs in Philadelphia, co-curated by my long time Portland gallery @antlerpdx . I’ve been a fan of the Paradigm team for a long time and I’m thrilled to show some of my work in Philly for the first time in forever. Go check it out if you’re in the neighborhood!

Here’s one more batch of paintings I’ve shown at @galleries1988 over the years. Today is their last day in business after 22 years. Absolute legends. Go pop over to their website and pick something up while you can.

I’m sure a lot of you have heard by now that @galleries1988 is closing up shop at the end of the month after 22 years in business. I wouldn’t be here right now if not for them. My art career was at a low point when I sent them a photo of my painting of R2D2 getting a parking ticket, and to my surprise they were like “hell yeah, we’ll show that.” They took a chance on me back then, and jump started the careers of more artists than possibly any other gallery I know. So while I’m very sad they’re closing down, I think 22 years in a very difficult business is a tremendous accomplishment worth celebrating. So here’s a bunch of paintings from various shows I did at Gallery 1988 over the years. Jensen and Katie were always super supportive of me getting as weird as I wanted with my shows there, including being totally ok with me doing a whole show essentially about fast food. They even let me curate a couple shows with them in more recent years. They really allowed me to stretch my wings and grow, and to find an audience along the way. It’s a chance most artists don’t get, and I’ll be forever grateful. Cheers to Gallery 1988 and their ongoing legacy.
