It’s hard enough to hit a moving target with a pistol when you’re standing still; if you’re on a moving horse, it’s dang near impossible.

Ready or Not Firing from a moving horse made accurate shooting extremely difficult, especially with the smoothbore, low-sight pistols common in the early 1800s. A rider would have to synchronize the shot with the horse's gait (e.g., when the horse exhales or is in a certain part of its stride) while steering the horse with the legs and seat, freeing one or both hands for the firearm. #westernart #coloradoartist #cowboyart

Cowboys in the Old West were expert trackers, using their keen observation of cattle signs (hoofprints, droppings, broken twigs) to find lost livestock, manage herds on long drives, and even track outlaws or rustlers, skills honed by constant exposure to nature and the need for self-reliance, essential for survival and work on the open range, from spotting predators to navigating vast territories.
