Couldn’t have done it without Mele!
Brief soak in of the incredible stretch of prairie behind the buildings. It is collaboratively managed with the Lake Forest Open Lands Association, and acknowledged as the traditional homelands of the Peoria, Potawatomi, Myaamia, Kiikaapoi, Ochethi Sakowin and many other tribes.
Many thanks to Paul, Mary-Beth, Anna, Mele, Catalina, and Gay 😘
The Plot Twist I Didn’t See Coming…
Last year when I lost my studio production management job, I knew I had a decision to make quickly.
Home studio?
Or become a studio owner?
What felt uncertain at first became one of the most transformative seasons of my life. It’s been an AMAZING journey.
The greatest gift this year hasn’t just been building a space, it’s been building community. Collaborating with other creatives. Teaching portrait workshops in different spaces. Stretching ourselves beyond what feels comfortable. Watching artists grow in real time.
And adding a videographer @spoesty into the mix? Game changer. Seeing our work come alive in motion adds a whole new layer of storytelling and value.
This clip from our last Portraits with Kambua, featuring the incredibly talented @schnabl.space captures exactly what I love most the joy of creating and learning together.
There is nothing like a room full of creatives pushing light, shadow, and possibility.
And we’re doing it again in March.
If last year taught me anything, it’s this: When one door closes, build your own studio.
See you in March….

Some Joyce studio photos taken the day before our Judson Church performance. Still riding the high. Thank you @afarleyshimota@calebpattymelt@mariahanne97 for dancing with such focused verve. Composer for extending our sonic implications as we make marks in time/place @kingbee999 , and dear old, ever new friend @schnabl.space for coming in all the way from Chicago with these glorious costumes. I treasure the process, and people. (Last 2 photos taken the day of our show. A brisk walk on the East River. Third time’s a charm try’s with the self-timer.)
TONIGHT! at 7pm come see a performance of a section of a new work-in-progress with my long-term co-creator choreographer @jodyober on our latest collab. Performed by Andi, Caleb, Jody & Maryah to original score by John King.
At the legendary Judson Church hosted by MovementResearch: A free, high visibility low-tech forum for experimentation, emerging ideas, and works-in-progress held in the Fall and Spring seasons. Artists are selected by a rotating committee of peer artists, and join Movement Research Artists-In-Residence and international guests each season in performing at the historic Judson Memorial Church.
