After a super busy weekend with stadium-goers, we're giving a shout out to everyone at @duxcentral .
Here's a little-known fact: they are kind and generous sponsors of SCAPE Public Art, supporting us with a tab so we can host potential sponsors and visiting artists. From one long-standing Christchurch icon to another: we're deeply grateful, and we hope you get some rest!

We're loving this art by pupils of Te Kāpehu Riccarton School 😍
In term one, we delivered a SCAPE in Schools workshop at Te Kāpehu, responding to Sēmisi Fetokai Potauaine's sculpture VAKA 'A HINA.
Today we want to thank @becagroup for its regular support of SCAPE's education programmes - your support empowers children, develops their confidence, and stretches their creative thinking. Thanks BECA! 🫶
VAKA 'A HINA is located in Rauora Park.

Last week we popped into @blt_funeral_home with a presentation poster to thank them for their steady support. They've helped produce 29 artworks and counting.

Art learning is as much about process as outcome. It's about risk-taking, perseverance, critical thinking, looking, experimentation, creative expression, and play. These are skills that a child can carry with them for life.
These April school holidays, we're running two workshops looking at “Ka Mua Ka Muri” by Kazu Nakagawa – a sculpture with a very special message for Christchurch – which is right outside the Multicultural Community & Recreation Centre, 455 Hagley Ave. Suitable for school students of all ages, they'll learn about the artist’s ideas and 3D paper construction techniques, then create their own art in a supportive environment.

Reclaim impermanence as a superpower 👊
Pictured:
@vaimailaurale O Le Sami Po Uliuli II (2025) lifted by crane and loaded onto a truck by John Jones Steel: SCAPE will re-use the frame.
The team from @readylawn_nz making good the grass at @artscentrechch after removal of the Public Art by Kids (2025). We relocated the murals and sculptures to the Christchurch Climate Action Campus to be enjoyed by more kids over the next few years.
Artist @stone_maka celebrating the relocation of Pingao (2024) to his home in South New Brighton. This temporary work is a prototype, testing materials and shapes at approximately half size.
SCAPE installs temporary artworks by design:
✦ It keeps the city alive. They inject energy, surprise, and a reason to take a second look.
✦ It gives artists more freedom. Bigger ideas. Bolder forms.
✦ It is a proving ground, a stepping stone. In Christchurch, creative kids can event start stretching that public art muscle at school with SCAPE Education.
✦ It belongs to everyone. Free, accessible, right in the streets - no gallery ticket required.
✦ It responds to the moment. Art that speaks to where we are right now.
✦ It makes room for what's next. The end of one work is the beginning of another conversation.
So another chapter closes. But the city just got a little more ready for whatever comes next.

Today we farewell artist and treasured friend of SCAPE, Philip Trusttum (1940-2026). We remember the many times he popped in for a chat - when he would share insights about his art and stories from his life. A fine artist, indeed, but an equally fine human being. Our deepest sympathy and best wishes are with Philip's family at this time. We will miss him.

With the permission of the sender, we're sharing an email received by Sarah, SCAPE's Education Manager. Thanks to @youthubchch and our artist mentors for being partners in this project, completed in May 2025.
We wish the fabulous young person in question all the very best for her art studies!

Marking the end of an incredible chapter as @tyson______campbell wraps up three years as Managing Curator at SCAPE Public Art. We took a moment to reflect and celebrate together over delicious food and drinks at The Montreal bar and restaurant at @hotelmontrealchch - SCAPE hospitality partner and occasional home away from home for our visiting artists.
Art and design do not always make easy bedfellows. Similar skillsets but different orientations and imperatives can make for a fractious sibling rivalry. We're delighted to say that in @studiopublica we've found a strategic design partner committed to understanding our arty ways.
Thanks for bringing your flare to our 2025-6 public art season. We're just at the start of this journey, and we can't wait to see what develops together!

As we begin removing our temporary public artworks after their three-month run, we’re reflecting on everything that goes into bringing these projects to life. This includes the winning work from SCAPE’s Inside Out public art competition for school students.
The student sculptures and murals were carefully stewarded from idea to installation by a project manager from @rcp_newzealand , along with the SCAPE team and Lewis Bradford Consulting Engineers.
Project management isn’t always glamorous but it’s essential. Huge thanks to RCP for the care, coordination, and calm behind the scenes.

Today we’d like to acknowledge and thank @enimanufacturingltd for their generous expertise and care across recent public art projects.
In 2024, ENI fabricated 'Toro Atua' by @aretawilkinson for SCAPE, now a permanent presence in the Rolleston town centre. In 2025, they produced the panels for @vaimailaurale 'O Le Sami Po Uliuli II', a powerful temporary installation in the Christchurch Botanic Gardens.
Across both projects, the ENI team demonstrated a deep understanding that detail matters in art. Their collaborative approach and strong working relationships with artists and project managers made a real difference—and we’re truly grateful for their contribution.
