Back in January 2022, I shared that I was selected by JAI (Jewish Artist Initiative) to create a piece to honor one of the pioneering women rabbis, Jackie Tabick, on the 50th anniversary of women in the rabbinate.
I'm happy to report that after traveling with the exhibit for the past 3 years, this piece, "Serving as the Hands of G-d," has been purchased by a private collector.

In 1975, the City of Los Angeles commissioned local artist Sandy Bleifer to paint a mural on the Hayvenhurst underpass of the 101 Freeway. The resulting piece was “Can of Cardines” – a commentary on LA’s burgeoning car culture featuring an open sardine can full of smashed cars. Now considered one of the City’s most iconic murals, 50 years of wear and tear have left their mark.
In partnership with the Encinco Neighborhood Council, our office was able to help fund the restoration of “Can of Cardines” with Sandy herself restoring the piece to its original glory! We joined her this weekend to celebrate the final product and meet the legendary artist.
Sandy – your artistry, advocacy, and creativity has and continues to be an inspiration. Your dedication to uplifting social justice, urban revitalization, and environmental sustainability have made the City of Los Angeles a more vibrant place and we are so grateful you continue to call this city home.

I'm so happy to get the word out about Nick Pastaouras' wonderful book, "The Making of Modern Los Angeles." Unlike most historical examinations of cities, Nick highlights the value of the arts - individual creators as well as institutions - including theater, music, architecture, visual art, film, and dance. He shows how artists have not only worked and lived here, but defined the essence of Los Angeles for ourselves and the world. For those who aren't aware, Nick was highly instrumental in getting public art into the subway stations. I can't recommend this book enough, and thank you, Nick, for including me as one of the artists mentioned in the book.

Thanks to Councilperson Nithya Raman, along with the support of the San Fernando Valley Arts & Cultural Center, restoration of my mural, "Can of Cardines," will begin. For those who would like to see the process in action, we will be working there from July15-26th.
I painted “Can of Cardines” in 1975, assisted by two of my (then) teenage neighbors: Zachary Sharp and Anthony Lomax. Highly visible on the wall of the underpass of the 101 freeway at the bottom of the Hayvenhurst exit, the mural evokes the pervasive frustration of Valleyites connecting with the City by an often gridlocked freeway.
The mural received some refreshing in 2000. Since then, the bottom half of the mural was painted over to hide graffiti, thereby compromising the illusion of the grey cement wall appearing to be a large sardine can with demolished cars seemingly tucked inside the freeway. The key that opens the can had originally been rendered dimensionally, casting a shadow and appearing to project away from the wall. That illusion will be reclaimed using new graffiti removal products developed in Italy.
We are still seeking additional funding to restore the upper portion of the mural, which has also been tagged and overpainted through the years.
The restoration team led by Kirsten Graves, Site & Studio Conservation, includes interns from the Inner Resources Mural Conservation Apprenticeship Project which trains the next generation of professional conservators. The Office of Community Beautification from the City of LA will apply a protective clear coating to make sure this mural retains its clarity since murals all over the city are being spruced up to welcome visitors for the 2028 Olympics.
For those who would like to visit the mural, parking is available at the Park and Ride lot across the street at 5174 Hayvenhurst Ave, Encino, CA 91436

It was such fun when we had open studios in the neighborhood. Venice Art Block was such a gift to the community. Feeling nostalgic. Welcome to my studio.
