One of my absolute favorite ocean creatures - the Spotted Eagle Ray 🦅 There’s just something purely magical about the way they glide through the deep blue waters. 🌊✨
They’re the perfect mix of elegance and strength. I could watch them for hours. But we don’t see them in Bali too often, which makes me miss diving in the Maldives even more… so I made a little infographic to bring them closer 💙
Swipe to dive deeper into their world 🌊✨

Sea Turtles are one of the most fascinating animals found in the Maldives! 🌊🐢🌊
Around Thoddoo, we spot Hawksbills daily, munching on brightly-colored sponges, getting their shells cleaned by cleaner-fish or just gracefully gliding along the shallow edges of the House Reef.
While they may seem curious about divers, we must always respect their space and never touch or chase them. The Ocean is their home and we are just visitors.

Sea turtles are iconic to the Maldives, a favorite to locals and tourists alike. 🌊🐢🌊
In Thoddoo, we encounter Green Sea Turtles every day, grazing on seagrass in the shallow lagoon or swimming around the reef that surrounds the island.
While they are accustomed to tourists, it’s crucial that we never touch and disturb them, allowing them to thrive in their Ocean home.

The Power of Scuba Divers 🌊
🤿 We fell deeply in love with the breathtaking beauty of marine life and the vibrant ecosystems that thrive beneath the waves. We also see the stark reality of plastic pollution that threatens these fragile environments. It’s a crisis that calls for immidiate action, and as divers, we are perfectly positioned to make a difference.
🌊 Each dive we embark on is an opportunity to contribute to a cleaner, healthier Ocean. By incorporating debris collection into our diving routines, we transform our passion for exploration into a force for positive change. Every piece of rubbish we remove - whether it’s a massive abandoned ghost net or a single plastic bag - helps to protect marine life and restore the pristine beauty of our Ocean.
📝 But our efforts don’t stop at collecting debris. Make sure you submit your findings to PADI AWARE, to contribute valuable data that helps drive global conservation efforts. This data informs policies, supports scientific research, and raises awareness about the critical issue of marine debris. Our collective contributions create a powerful ripple effect that extends far beyond the single dive site.
Here are 5 steps you can take to #MakeEveryDiveCount
🐟Prepare: always carry a mesh bag and gloves to safely collect debris.
🐟Dive Responsibly: Avoid damaging marine life while collecting rubbish. Practice buoyancy control.
🐟Document: Record the debris you collect. Submit your data to @PADIAWARE through their app.
🐟Educate: Share your experiences with others. Raise awareness about the importance of reducing plastic use and protecting our Ocean.
🐟Advocate: Support policies and initiatives that aim to reduce marine debris and promote sustainable practices.
Join the AWARE movement. 💙🌊
Together, we can create a wave of change.
Also, random throwback to last year, with my fav underwater clean-up team, because I miss them every day :* @juurczakp@leebythesea__@earthwithzoe

The Ocean, our planet’s beating heart 💙 is facing a challenge of unprecedented proportions: #MarineDebris
🏝️ While the reefs and shores of small island nations - like Maldives - are amongst the most affected, this is not just a local issue, but a GLOBAL CRISIS that affects every corner of our blue planet. 🩵🌎🩵
🌊 From the deepest trenches to the shallow lagoons, our waters are overloaded with trash, particularly single-use plastic items. These plastics often show up during our #DiveAgainstDebris surveys and are among the most preventable sources of marine pollution. Single-use plastics are convenient, yes, but their convenience comes at a steep cost to marine life and Ocean ecosystems.
🐟 Imagine a world where every plastic bag you use, every cigarette you smoke and every straw you drink through ends up choking the sea creatures we love. It’s a dire image, but it’s our reality. Yet, the power to change this lies within our hands.
🤿 As scuba divers, we are the natural ambassadors of the Ocean. We witness its beauty and its struggles firsthand. Every dive we take deepens our connection to the underwater world and strengthens our commitment to protect it. By incorporating debris collection into our dives, we are making a tangible impact. Each piece of trash we remove is a step toward a cleaner, healthier Ocean.
🫡 But our role doesn’t end underwater. By advocating for sustainable practices, reducing our own plastic usage, and supporting policies that aim to reduce plastic pollution, we amplify our impact. Our actions inspire others to follow suit, creating a ripple effect that can lead to significant change.
📢 Let’s harness the power of our global diving community to address this crisis!
Our local actions combined create a global impact! Share your clean-up dives stories, educate others about the importance of reducing plastic use, and join citizen-science initiatives like @padiaware Dive Against Debris. Together, we can turn the tide on marine pollution. 🌊
The ocean gives us so much 🥹
it’s time we give back! 🩵🩵🩵

Diving into action for cleaner Ocean 💙
It’s always been my student divers who inspired me the most. They remind me that we can make a positive difference with every dive we log.
As scuba divers, we witness firsthand the negative impacts of human activity. Man-made marine debris is a growing threat to our Ocean. 🌊
From every-day single use plastic bags and bottles to commercial fishing gear abandoned at sea, marine debris endangers marine life and the overall health of underwater ecosystems.
My OWD students and best dive buddies

Are you against octopus farming? 🐙
~
Octopuses are incredibly intelligent!
They enjoy solving puzzles and can escape complicated traps!
🐙
Like many marine creatures octopuses are threatened by overfishing and habitat destruction.
~
On the other hand octopus farming poses serious ethical concerns.

Lionfish have a deep reddish-brown coloration with white bands covering the head, body, fins and spines. 🦁 Due to their beauty they are very popular in aquarium trade. It’s mostly due to unintentional and intentional release, that the Lionfish is now an #InvasiveSpecies in the Atlantic.
It’s important that we only fight the Lionfish in areas where they don’t originally belong. In the Indo-Pacific, they play a crucial role on maintaining the balance of species on a coral reef. Here in Maldives, we rather focus on controlling #COTs Crown of Thorns Starfish populations, and we leave the Lionfish to enjoy their lives ;) ❤️🦁❤️

The Mantis Shrimp (or ‘Stomatopod’) is a small, aggressive marine Crustacean, that can be found in tropical and subtropical waters of the Indian and Pacific Oceans. 🌊
They are beautiful and vibrant in colour, but also deadly! Infamous for it’s incredible punching force, they were given the nickname ‘thumb splitter‘, due to the painful gashes they can cause if handled without care by humans.
⚠️ when scuba diving or snorkeling, ALWAYS INTERACT WITH ANIMALS IN A PASSIVE WAY. Don’t touch or feed any critters, as it not only creates risk for you and the animal, but can also disturb their natural mating and feeding behaviors.
