🌿 Save the Ridge. Protect the Rare. 🌿 Did you know today is Endangered Species Day? While we often think of far-away rainforests, one of the most critically threatened ecosystems is right in our backyard: the Record Ridge Grasslands. This isn't your average pasture. Record Ridge is a rare, high-elevation grassland ecosystem that is red-listed, meaning it is at imminent risk of extinction. Its ecological importance is so profound that it has been designated as a Key Biodiversity Area (KBA)—a global recognition reserved for places absolutely critical to the persistence of the planet's biodiversity. What makes it so special? These globally recognized grasslands on Record Ridge are intricately woven into a mosaic of Old-Growth Management Area (OGMA) forests. This unique intersection of ancient trees and high-altitude grasslands creates a vital, irreplaceable sanctuary for wildlife and rare plant species, including the red-listed Mountain Holly Fern—found only in a few other locations in Canada. Once these ancient ecosystems are gone, they cannot be replaced by reclamation projects. They are a living history book, a carbon sink, and a biodiversity hotspot. This Endangered Species Day, let’s speak up for the landscapes that can't speak for themselves. Protect Record Ridge. Protect our old-growth. 💚 ✨ How you can help: Educate: Share this post to spread the word about the vulnerability and uniqueness of this high-elevation Key Biodiversity Area. Donate: Support our conservation initiatives to protect Record Ridge and its surrounding OGMAs by making a donation to our GofundMe (link in bio). Respect: When visiting these sensitive ecosystems, stay on designated trails to prevent erosion, protect fragile native flora and please keep your furry friends on a leash. #EndangeredSpeciesDay #RecordRidge #KeyBiodiversityArea #SaveRecordRidge #OldGrowthForest GrasslandConservation Biodiversity BCEnvironment ActForNature ProtectTheRare

The RMDC's Speaker Series is back at it with a special presentation on the fight to save a local landscape! Join Nils and other members of the Save Record Ridge Action Committee @saverecordridge for a behind-the-scenes look at the community effort to protect Record Ridge, a place tied closely to Rossland’s landscape, trails, environment, economy, and future. This presentation will share the story behind the newsletters and headlines, and highlight the people from across our community who contributed, the organizations across North America that lent a hand, the work done around kitchen tables and the documents drafted late at night, the emotional weight of a long public fight, and the legal case that is now before the courts. Hear directly from the front line on why this matters — and what may lie ahead. Part local story, part explainer, and part roadmap for a long fight ahead, this talk is for anyone who wants to better understand where things stand, how the community got here, and why Record Ridge continues to matter. Don't forget to stick around until the end for a question-and-answer period with SRRAC directors. 🗓️ 6 pm Thursday, May 14th 📍Rossland Museum & Discovery Centre, 1100 Hwy 3B, Junction of Hwys 3B & 22 More info/RSVP at rosslandmuseum.ca/news/2026/may-speaker

A Strong Finish in Court + Sock Collab Launch Party TODAY!! The final day of our judicial review wrapped up nicely, and we couldn’t be prouder of how our community showed up. The courthouse was packed wall-to-wall with heart and commitment! Here’s a recap from the hearing: 👉The Argument: Our lead counsel, Ben Isitt, delivered a compelling case along with co-counsel Matthew Nefstead generously provided by @wcelaw . We argued that while the project’s "official" production numbers were dropped just below the threshold for an Environmental Assessment, the actual mine plan remained largely unchanged. 👉The Missing Link: A key point of our case is that the decision-maker failed to "grapple with" why the plan stayed the same despite the lower output. 👉The Judge’s Stance: Justice Weatherill acknowledged the significance of Record Ridge and clearly grasps the gravity of what is at stake for our grasslands, the Sinixt, and the entire region. What’s Next? The injunction remains in place! 🛡️ We now await a final decision, which is expected in mid-June. 💜A massive thank you to everyone who stood with us—from Sinixt knowledge keepers to business owners, kids, city council, environmental organizations and legal teams. Your presence proved that this region is paying attention. 🗓️ REMINDER: Join us TODAY (Saturday, May 9) at @rosslandbeerco from 3 PM – 6 PM for our Sock Collab Launch Party! Pick up your pre-orders, bid on the silent auction, and let’s celebrate this momentum together. 🍻🧦 #SaveRecordRidge #RecordRidgeForever #Sinixt #RosslandWild #StrongerTogether

Yes, Rossland used to be a mining town. But we also used to rip down the mountain on wooden skis and leather boots. Things change. Today, the town is known for world-class trails, backcountry terrain, and a tourism economy built on outdoor recreation, drawing people from across B.C. and beyond. The proposed open-pit mine on Record Ridge could impact that reality. We stand with local tourism businesses and organizations like @saverecordridge around Rossland, calling on the Province to pause further approvals and withhold permits until key concerns around tourism, public health, ecosystems, and Indigenous rights, are fully and transparently addressed. This week, a judicial review in Rossland will help determine what happens next. Stop. Think. Because once decisions like this are made, there’s no easy way back. This isn’t about choosing between economy and environment. In Rossland, they’re the same thing. Link in bio for more information.
