May 5th is Red Dress Day – a day to honour and remember Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit People. The red dresses we see in our communities are powerful reminders of lives taken and of the love, strength and resilience that remain.
For Sask Polytech, Red Dress Day is both a time for reflection and a call to action. It reminds us of our shared responsibility to remember, to listen and to act.
As we observe Red Dress Day, we encourage everyone across our campus communities to pause, reflect on the meaning of this day and recommit to moving forward, together.
Exploring a trade while celebrating her Indigenous culture proved to be a winning combination for Drianna Whitehead. The Welding certificate student was inspired to pursue training in the trade after participating in the Weld a Tipi event in Prince Albert hosted by Women in Trades and Technology (WITT) powered by Orano.
She found out about the course offered to Indigenous female high school students through the vice principal of Wesmor Public High School, Mrs. Gunville, who encouraged her to sign up with her sister.
“When I heard it was welding, I was ready to try it,” she says. “I was inspired by artists on social media who create sculptures using welding. I thought I could make one of those projects.”

The wītōkamāhtōtān Indigenous Student Success team hosted the niskipîsim Round Dance last week welcoming the community to honour the awakening of Mother Earth and the Goose Moon, a time that marks the return of the geese and the beginning of spring. People of all ages and backgrounds filled the gymnasium at Prince Albert campus, linking hands and moving together to the beat of the drum.
This week at the Prince Albert campus, Sask Polytech welcomed Indigenous high school students to take part in hands-on activities, explore programs and career options, and connect with our instructors. We had so much fun! Thank you to everyone who joined us.
