My thoughts on the wave of xenophobic attacks against African nationals in South Africa:
History reminds us that Nigeria stood firmly with South Africa during the struggle against apartheid, offering strong political, moral, and financial support in the fight for freedom and equality. It is therefore painful to witness growing hostility and attacks against fellow Africans on South African soil.
At the heart of this tension is the harsh reality of economic hardship and poverty, which have led some South Africans to believe that foreign African nationals are taking away their jobs and means of livelihood. While these frustrations are real, violence and xenophobia cannot be the answer. Africans share a common history, struggle, and destiny, and unity should always prevail over division.
