Lightnings. Monolog eines Innenraums by Sara Gassmann at 171 Gallery in Lucerne. 26.2.-17.4.2026
171 GALLERY presents works - paintings and ceramic pieces that explore the interior space of perception, psychological architecture, and quite concentration.
The exhibition unfolds a calm and focused visual language of reduced still lifes. Objects, vessels, and architectural fragments are detached from their functional context and brought into new, carefully balanced relationships. These are not depictions of real spaces, but mental constructions shaped by clarity, openness and subtle tension.
Gassmann’s pictorial spaces do not follow a fixed spatial logic, but an inner principle of order: scales shift, layers overlap, and familiar elements appear in unexpected proximity. The interior emerges as a quietly charged field between perception and imagination.
In both painting and ceramics, these elements condense into compositions of great stillness and formal precision. Through reduction, emptiness, and structural balance, the works create open image spaces that allow the viewer’s gaze to unfold.

Lightnings. Monolog eines Innenraums
Solo Exhibition by Sara Gassmann
The opening of Sara Gassmann’s solo exhibition is just around the corner. Lightnings. Monolog eines Innenraums brings together a new body of work in which interior space unfolds as both architectural structure and psychological condition.
In preparation, we visited the artist in her studio overlooking the railway lines of Bern Wankdorf. The light-filled space reveals a practice grounded in material sensitivity and sustained perceptual inquiry. Canvases and ceramic surfaces enter into dialogue, guided by intuition and chromatic precision.
In this recent series, architectural fragments and still life elements are freed from narrative function and transformed into autonomous visual fields. These interiors do not enclose; they open quiet spaces of expansion and suspended time.
Join us for the opening and discover the full studio visit and interview via the link in bio.

Colours dance across the surface!
Installation view of new works by the artist @saragassmann in the exhibition „Le Sacre du Printemps“.
In autumn 2023, Sara Gassmann created a large number of new paintings that can be viewed as a coherent cycle of works and are being shown here for the first time. The artist never works on just one painting, but on several at the same time, creating relationships between the individual works. Although the process is characterised by rapid painting, it takes time for a work to unfold in its final form. The process begins with pencil drawings, which Sara Gassmann records in sketchbooks. They form a kind of foundation for the start of the new paintings. During the painting process, layers of paint are placed next to and on top of each other. In doing so, Sara Gassmann allows the lower layers to shine through opaquely and the interaction of the colours intensifies. Sara Gassmann searches for an arc of tension in the painting, a balance between control and chance. She is interested in the processual interweaving of form and colour and of figure and ground. The colour begins to come alive and the figurative and narrative elements recede into the background. Through layering and mixing, compositions are created in which the colours interact like dancers on a stage.
