A powerful reflection from filmmaker @stevenravenliangfilms captures what made SQFF Presents at Central California Women’s Facility so meaningful. In his new piece for @filmmakermag , Steven writes about screening his documentary short, Oscar’s Return, before more than 300 incarcerated women during the San Quentin Film Festival’s first event outside the walls of San Quentin Rehabilitation Center. The article is a beautiful reminder of what this festival is all about: bringing filmmakers, artists, and audiences together through storytelling, healing, and human connection. Thank you, Steven, for sharing your experience and for being part of this unforgettable day. Submissions are now open for the next San Quentin Film Festival. Visit the link in our bio to submit your film and join us in celebrating stories that inspire transformation. We’re so proud of what came together at the first-ever film festival inside CCWF. A powerful day rooted in storytelling, creativity, and community. The voices, the energy, and the willingness to share truth and lived experience made this something special. This is what it looks like when opportunity, access, and creativity come together in a meaningful way. At Central California Women’s Facility, the San Quentin Film Festival created space for women to be seen, heard, and recognized through film and storytelling. This was not just a red carpet moment. It was a reflection of creativity, discipline, and the power of storytelling to shift perspective. The work continues to show that creativity does not stop at circumstance, and storytelling remains one of the strongest tools for connection and change. Thank you to everyone who contributed to making this moment possible. Last Saturday at the Central California Women’s Facility (CCWF) in Chowchilla, the @sanquentinff hosted the first film festival inside of a women’s prison in California’s history. After a dozen years of working in prisons, this was my first visit to a women’s facility. I watched a handful of films, enjoyed a couple panel discussions and took notes as the folks inside the institution shared stories about their dreams and their lived experiences. I laughed, learned and met people. I shed a tear and had some thoughts about how we all got here. And then I wrote about it. Read the full article by clicking the link in my bio.
