The #HonorGuard from the Substance Abuse Treatment Facility along with California State Prison-Corcoran administrative staff and CDCR executives attended the April 28 funeral of @tularecountysheriff Detective Randy Hoppert in Porterville. Undersecretary Jason Johnson joined hundreds of law enforcement officers, family members and the community to honor Hoppert’s life, service and sacrifice. Hoppert was killed in the line of duty on April 9 while responding to an eviction notice call with fellow deputies. Authorities said the suspect opened fire during the incident, striking Hoppert as he provided backup to other officers. He later died at a nearby hospital.

CDCR stood shoulder to shoulder with law enforcement agencies from across the state to honor the brave peace officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to others. We especially remember and honor our own, Agent Joshua Byrd, whose courage and dedication will never be forgotten. Their watch may have ended, but their legacy lives on in every badge worn and every oath upheld. We stand for the fallen, and beside the families they left behind. #cdcracademy #cdcr #correctionalofficer #corrections

For #TeacherAppreciationWeek, CDCR institutions are recognizing the efforts teachers are making in rehabilitation. Career and Technical Education (CTE) is provided through six different career sectors that include building and construction, business and finance, information and communication technologies, fashion and interior design, manufacturing and product development, and transportation. Thanks to teachers in our institutions, participants are able to earn high school diplomas, GEDs, college degrees, and industry and trade certifications. These specialized educators do more than just show up to teach a class; they often provide encouragement and attention to incarcerated individuals who may have never received educational support before. In the three years after an individual is released from CDCR custody, those with an academic education achievement had on average a 12 percent lower rate of recidivism for re-arrests, convictions and returning to prison when compared to individuals who did not pursue education while incarcerated. The rate for recidivism for those who pursued CTE was reduced by an average of 14 percent.

CDCR Conservation Camps across the state are preparing for the 2026 wildfire season. In cooperation with @calfire , incarcerated hand crews are participating in annual Fire Preparedness Exercises. The exercises test physical fitness, operational readiness, fire safety and awareness, and a simulated medical emergency designed to evaluate crew response, quick decision making, and teamwork under fire line conditions. #WildfirePreparednessWeek #FireResponse #CDCR

This week we recognize Correctional Officer’s and Public Service Week, thanking staff across the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, California Correctional Health Care Services, and the California Correctional Training and Rehabilitation Authority. Public service is not easy. It requires commitment, professionalism, and a steady focus on the mission, often in challenging and complex environments. Whether they are working in our institutions, in a parole office, in the community, in health care settings, or supporting operations behind the scenes, their work matters. “You play a direct role in maintaining safety, supporting rehabilitation, delivering critical health care, and helping individuals prepare for successful reentry,” says CDCR Secretary Jeff Macomber. “That work has a real impact on communities across California.” To #correctionalofficers and #publicservants nationwide - thank you for your continued service.

CDCR is proud to partner with @ucsantabarbara (UCSB) to expand educational opportunities for students at CSP-Corcoran. Through the UCSB LIFTED program, students will have the option to pursue a Bachelor of Arts degree in literary studies while incarcerated. CDCR values education as an opportunity for incarcerated individuals to overcome challenging obstacles and positively contribute to communities. The department looks forward to growing its higher education opportunities in partnership with the University of California system.

HAND CREW READINESS TRAINING 🥾 ⛏️🪓 Before heading to the 2026 Crew Readiness Drills at the Ishi Conservation Camp, our hand crews were out at Lake Thurston sharpening their skills through an intensive, hands-on training. This video highlights firefighter hand crews from our Hood Mountain Fire Center, along with the vital role of our incarcerated hand crew members from @cacorrections . Hand crews are a critical part of @calfire ’s suppression efforts, working in areas where engines and dozers can’t reach. With chainsaws and hand tools, they cut fire lines that help slow the spread and ultimately contain wildfires.

Centinela State Prison hosted its Junior Cadet Academy, welcoming 240 Junior Cadets. The cadets broke off into six platoons, rotating stations and learning baton use and safety, medical response and CPR, firefighting, and cell searching. Demonstrations included the Crisis Response Team and the Investigative Services Unit K-9 operations. Junior Cadets also completed an obstacle course, all receiving a graduation certificate at the conclusion of their academy training. “It was great seeing the smiles on all the kids’ faces,” said Warden Andre Green. Other activities included a slime table, coloring, and potato sack racing, while a Southern Region transportation bus gave a tour of the bus and a ride around the institution. This event was made possible with donations from staff, the California Correctional Supervisors Organization, the California Correctional Peace Officers Association, the Centinela Employee Activities Committee, and local sponsors. #CDCR #juniorcadets

Incarcerated men from Pine Grove Youth Conservation Camp were given the opportunity to participate in a group #baptism. Made possible through the collective efforts of dedicated staff, supportive leadership, and a welcoming faith community, participants felt the baptism symbolized a fresh start and a moment of reflection, accountability, and renewal. “It gave me a different perspective on life,” said Ceasar Garcia, incarcerated YOP fire fighter. “I felt it cleansed me and gave me a sense of purpose.” This event stands as a historic first for the camp and highlights the importance of strong partnerships between institutions and community organizations, creating opportunities for growth and #rehabilitation. #CDCR

The theme for #NationalCrimeVictimsRightsWeek this year, “Listen. Act. Advocate. Protecting and serving communities,” calls for communities to connect to serve and support survivors of crimes. CDCR’s Office of Victim and Survivor Rights and Services (OVSRS) works with victims, families, and communities to overcome personal obstacles to ensure they are heard, believed, and have access to resources and services. This includes case notifications, parole hearing participation, and accessing restitution. OVSRS is dedicated to helping victims understand their rights to justice and receive restorative support on their journeys. #ncvrw26 #victimsrights #victimsservices
