An award-winning practice founded in 2010, @sandyrendelarch are celebrated for the unique connections they make between buildings and their surroundings. The practice has won multiple awards including being named Individual House Architect of the Year in the Architect of the Year Awards 2024 and being shortlisted twice for Grand Designs House of the Year. More recently their new house at Bury Gate Farm in West Sussex won a 2025 RIBA South East Award and was shortlisted for the Architects’ Journal House of the Year.

Design takes a lot of time, generally with an exponential relationship to small subtle incremental improvements that we strive for.
Conveying that information in a legible, buildable form takes even longer.
For our #flintfarm house in Easy Sussex we started by establishing loose rules for the graded brick and flint #bungaroosh but ironically have ended up drawing every brick to try and achieve the adhoc haphazard graded appearance.
The effort is always worth it even if only noticed by a few.

Planning submitted for a new dwelling to replace some redundant barns working with a low pitch double roof form reminiscent of many modern barns in the area.
Bury Gate Farm, a contemporary replacement dwelling in the South Downs National Park, this award-winning home by @sandyrendelarch reimagines the luxury country house through expansive architectural triple glazing and ultra-slim framed sliding glass doors.
Six sliding door sets open the south and east elevations to mature oak woodland, while double-height glazing forms a dramatic central hall. First floor casements and tilt and turn windows maximise natural light and panoramic views across the National Park, all engineered to withstand high wind loads and deliver exceptional thermal performance.

Graded bungaroosh with a flint base gradually morphing into a fully brick parapet/eaves. The traditional brick quoins fade out and eventually disappear entirely within the mass of brickwork.
Field flints, stock brickwork, precast cills and lintels.

Myriad worked as Principal Contractor on this project in Lewes in 2015.
Located on the bank of the river in Lewes, known as 'the rusty house', or 'the corten riverhouse', the main body of the house is a simple two storey pitched roof structure with a ridge line that is carved away to break down the building's scale & reflect the cliff contours behind.
The gables & handmade ash-glazed brickwork, traditional to the town, help it to tie in well with the street.
The rugged in situ concrete retaining walls of the riverbank morph into slightly more refined board-marked concrete on the ground floor, which gives way to Corten rainscreen cladding above.
Simple inventive moves such as reversing the way the Corten sheets are hung create a subtle play between openness & solidity.
