We’re a family of four who decided to stop waiting for “someday.”
Kate stepped away from full-time work to go per diem. I shut down my main companies. Our kids, Hunter (7) and Maya (5) are learning more from the outdoors than any classroom could offer.
Our real home is a Ford F-250 Tremor with a Summit Expedition flatbed and a Four Wheel Camper, built by Basil’s Garage. It’s our family hauler, our cabin, and the thing that lets us turn any remote spot into home with enough room for all the gear and toys that make every stop an experience.
You can’t build a life around “getting out” when everything in your life is designed to keep you in. Managing a house, businesses, kids, and trying to chase meaningful time outside was all competing with itself. So we made a decision that most people talk about but rarely follow through on.
We sold the house we spent over a decade building; our “forever home.” We changed our careers, knowing there was no easy way back. Bought a condo we treat as base camp. And we built a life designed to make leaving easier than staying.
Within a month, we were on the road to Alaska with our kids (then 4 and 6) with no fixed schedule, no return date. That trip changed everything. We stopped planning so much and stopped rushing. A perfect lake or hot spring meant a few extra days. A conversation with a local meant a new direction. A wrong turn sometimes meant the best campsite of the trip.
That’s when we realized what overlanding really is for us. It starts when you stop checking the clock. Sixty days later, we came back… and immediately started planning the next stretch. We’re already planning to ship the truck to Denmark and explore Iceland in 2027.
