New @bakk.heia.records incoming! For our ninth offering we have ventured out of our small but fertile swamp in search of another source of magick. Meandering across boggy pastures new, we crossed paths with @steevio.suzybee , who sat hovering serenely in the fern covered shade of a nearby valley. Instantly recognising the singular vision of this fabled artist, we hastily gathered our nets and cast them under Steevio’s branches, capturing four beautiful offerings as they wriggled towards us. Upon the return to our mulch, it became clear that we could not contain Steevio’s creations, so wilful was their vitality. It was therefore all we could do to release them back to the universal dance from whence they came. Steevio’s music reflects the universal moments where seemingly chaotic and disparate elements are suddenly revealed to be perfectly harmonious. Of course examples of this are always universally present in nature, and have been eternally, but we have to be reminded to appreciate them. In the same way that a wave deposits a perfect line of shells on a beach, dew freezes on grass, or individual strands of mycelial hyphae bind together to form incredible patterns, Steevio’s music is likewise; effortlessly considered. For us, it has more in common with the unrelenting flow of a river than it does with dance music. It is psychedelic music in the same sense that nature is intuitively psychedelic; without ever leaning into any tried tropes of what is culturally considered ‘psychedelic’ music. MTV Music Week post This past summer I had the pleasure of Collaborating with @wearepinksaltmilan and @mtvuk on creating the identity for MTV Music week which took place the following week in Manchester! The illustrative approach celebrates the rich and varied heritage of Manchester, referencing different icons and scenes that make up some of this storied history. Through the work I wanted to highlight the sensory importance of music events within the cultural life of the city, something that has given me untold joy over the past 8 years living here (and a few sore headed mornings to boots), as communicated by the sensory flower motif. I also tried to get across the idea that, despite the often oppressive grey weather and, lets be honest, quite depressing surroundings the true colour of the city is created and sustained through the many creatives living and working here, a community that I feel privileged to contribute to in my own small way. Many thanks to the good folks at Pink Salt and MTV for getting me involved, its definitely been a trip seeing my work up around this fine city! When we started this gathering a decade ago, there was no plan beyond providing a home for us and our family of weirdos to splash about in. After ten years there is still no plan, but as we’ve trundled along this mossy path, we have come to realise that this strange thing we’ve created has shaped our lives. And those moments of communal transcendence we’ve experienced provide us with the impetus to continue. Not just the party, but continue to live; to work shit jobs, to do the dishes, to send the email. They remind us that joy exists, and there is a better way. So eternal gratitude to all the folks who have sloshed about with us along the way, and thank you to The White Hotel, for allowing us to frolic around unhindered for so long. Winter draws on, the January depression deepens, but fear not! The passage of time is in all cases unstoppable and Spring will spring again. We therefore invite you to celebrate the last vestiges of Winter in the warmth of our euphoric embrace. FROID DUB (Live) During the late 70s, several previously disparate musical worlds collided. Dub crashed headlong into punk, where it fused with early strains of hip hop and DIY electronics. Thus coalescing into the fluid and clumsily named world of new wave/post punk. Fast forward 50 years, add a liberal amount of 303s, drum machines, vintage synths, tonnes of juicy delay and a militantly low BPM approach and voila - Froid Dub are born. The Parisian based duo’s unique approach perfectly balances between cavernous digi dub, and angular cold wave, proving yet again that the most exciting music does not sit comfortably in one scene, but seeks to expand. This is sound system music in the purest sense, vive le dub! Pigeon Steve It’s with great pleasure to say that steering the ship after Froid Dub is our favourite Glaswegian head bobber - Pigeon Steve! Pidge has been squawking around our peripheries for some time, with a shared appreciation for the finer points of hypnotic acidic thumpers. After spending a decade promoting parties, spinning sonic yarns and releasing obscure Scottish post punk records via his imprint Seated Records, Steve has flapped his wings to London. The move being accompanied by the release of his latest EP on Vladimir Ivkovic’s hallowed Offen Music; a testament to his infectious productions, melding dub, chug, acid and trance to something wholly his own. There couldn’t be a more adept pair of wings behind the decks for the peak rave chaos cru.
