Why Cloth Still Matters: Contemporary Practices in Global South
Join us for a conversation with artist Thandiwe Muriu (
@thandiwe_muriu ) and curator Sreyansi Singh (
@sreyansisingh ), moderated by Samta Nadeem (
@samtanadeem ), curatorial director at STIR (
@stir_world ), exploring why cloth continues to matter as both material and method within renewed practices in contemporary art. In South Asia and Africa, cloth carries memory, identity, labour, and history in its threads, where textile has long been shaped by trade, empire, migration, and the work of women, moving between the intimate and the political. Across photography, research, and material practice, textile becomes a site of visibility, resistance, reimagining and archiving.
