Did you know that SAMS students have been on field trips to the Red Sea and the Isle of Arran?
At SAMS, students aren't just given knowledge, they learn how to be scientists, and how their work fits in with the marine environment.🌊🧑🔬🌍
Fine out more about studying at SAMS, a partner of @thinkuhi . Link in bio.
A very happy 100th birthday to Sir David Attenborough! 🥳🥰
Today marks a century of the life of one of the greatest ocean science communicators and natural historians.
Sir David fronted landmark programmes such as Blue Planet and Ocean, which have changed the way people view life in the ocean.
Thank you, Sir David.
Meet Dr Alla Silkina, our algal biotechnology expert at the BioHUB.
Alla works with companies to explore how algae can help tackle real-world challenges, from cleaning wastewater and capturing CO₂ to creating biomass for fertilisers, aquaculture and high-value products.
Her work shows just how versatile algae can be: tiny organisms with serious green economy potential.

Congratulations, Dr Awbery! 🎉🍾🎊🐋
Huge congratulations to SAMS (@thinkuhi ) PhD student Tim Awbery, who today successfully defended his viva: Modelling density, relative abundance and threats in a highly mobile marine vertebrate: Implications for spatio-temporal management of minke whales in western Scottish waters.
He celebrated his success with fellow students and SAMS staff - he even had a minke whale cake and themed biscuits to help mark the occasion!
Tim, who is the current UHI Student of the Year, was supervised at SAMS by Dr Denise Risch and Prof. Ben Wilson and by Dr Monica Arso Civil (Scottish Government Marine Directorate), Assoc. Prof. Lauren McWhinnie (Heriot-Watt University) and Dr Lauren Hartny-Mills (@hwdt_org ).
Examiners were Dr Tim Szewczyk of SAMS and Assistant Prof. Clare Embling (University of Plymouth).
His viva defence brings to a close an extremely successful PhD journey for Tim, who also won numerous conference presentation prizes.
A huge well done from everyone at SAMS and best wishes for the future!
When new connections create new life!
In March we had a visit from HECA (Higher Education Consultants Association) education counsellors from the U.S. and other nations who immersed themselves in the world of marine science.
As well as learning more about our BSc Marine Science offering and the wider @thinkuhi network, they got to visit our labs and facilities.
The roots of that visit have taken hold now, as the seagrass seeds (Zostera Marina) they planted with Dr @alasdairodell have germinated in our experimental seagrass nursery. A lovely reminder of what was a really fun day.

Earlier this month some of our students and staff travelled to the Isle of Arran for our new field study expedition. It was a great week working with @arran.coast . Have a look what they got up to. A big thank you to all the students and staff for their photos!! 🪸🐚🌊 @thinkuhi #sams #marinebiology #thinkuhi #samsmarinescience #marinescience
Congratulations to the final year students on our BSc Marine Science degree who recently gave their dissertation talks in front of staff and fellow students.
No mean feat, and all were brilliant!
What a way to enjoy the sun and have a break from exam revision!! 🤩
Thank you to everyone who came along! See you all on Skye, we can't wait 😁

Next up in our series is Dr Claudio Greco, whose work focuses on unlocking the potential of fungi and the powerful natural compounds they produce.
It’s a fascinating area with real-world relevance across food, health and agriculture.
