Peafowl, Sydney Zoo, Australia
While this guy got a lot of attention at the Zoo, peafowls are more of a nuisance and distraction for safari guides in Sri Lanka.
Before visiting Yala Park, imagining a place where these beautiful creatures are native and roam freely was impossible. Then when you get there, there is so much frenzied enthusiasm for sighting leopards that the peafowl roam the dirt paths mostly unnoticed. I had to take a day out of our past two Sri Lankan safaris to focus purely on "non-leopard" animals like this.

Spotted Hyena, Maasai Mara, Kenya
Hyenas were a family favorite - always poking their big ears out of the bush whenever a fresh carcass was nearby. They might look like vicious beasts but they are scavengers and generally avoid humans, most likely found relaxing in a roadside puddle or cuddling with their pups.

East African Cheetah, Maasai Mara, Kenya
Cheetahs quickly became one of my favorite subjects to photograph in Kenya, and I was lucky to see several of them across the national reserve parks I visited. They are truly statuesque from just about any angle. More cheetah shots to come!

Cape Buffalo, Maasai Mara, Kenya
The Cape Buffalo is among the top 3 most dangerous large mammals in the savannah, claiming over 200 human lives per year (typically in self-defense). Do you know which large mammal is the undisputed deadliest?

Tawny Eagle and Hooded Vultures, Maasai Mara
Predators and scavengers like these often interact at carcass sites. Tawny eagles are larger and usually run the show, so it was interesting to watch these hooded vultures swoop in and disturb the eagle's peace.

African Lions vs Cape Buffalo Herd, Maasai Mara, Kenya
Part 3: The buffalo protest
I had completely forgotten about the rest of the herd. They marched right up to the scene and stood watching the lions over their kill. By then, the mother was too wounded to move.
One of the buffalos stepped forward and tried to lift her with its horns, as if trying to help her get back up. It was no use. The lions roared and the herd backed off a little, then just stood there and watched silently as the lions ate.
The whole thing was just heartbreaking. I felt so conflicted-it's the circle of life, but it's brutal to witness up close. In our jeep, one of my daughters started sobbing as we continued to watch, all of us a bit shell-shocked.
We went back the next day and vultures were picking at what was left. The day after that, all we found was a perfectly white buffalo skeleton where she had fallen.
